wanted to chime in and give my 2 Euro cents worth:

Sonny Landreth is a great player and I really like his playing on the John Hiatt live at the Budokan. But not much slide there. I thought the slide solo on Lipstick Sunset (I think it was on that number) was a bit lacking though.Electron

hey Electron,

I like that CD too, but it's NOT Sonny Landreth or The Goners on it. That was another band Hiatt had for awhile. The guitarist was Michael Ward....who now plays with The Wallflowers......

Ry's solo on the original "Lipstick Sunset" (Bring the Family) is one of my top 2 or 3...of ALL time!!

Very Happy

Thanks Jimfog for that info. It seems I mistook the band for the Goners!

Cheers!

Just found out Sonny Landreth will be at the Portland Waterfront Blues Festival this summer. Can't wait to hear him play again, especially after everyone's comments. BTW, he plays slide on three tunes on the new Curtis Salgado CD, Strong Suspician. I had it playing in my car for two whole weeks before finally switching back to my RF collection.

The only thing that seemed to get on my nerves after a while was whenever he played some licks (mainly when the dynamics of the band increased), he used to strum with his whole hand all the strings before playing the lick. Sort of like a little eruption before each new lick. This is great sometimes, but not all the time.

I love Derek's playing, but I have to agree. This repetitive riff drives me nuts, and he does it a lot. It's like a little musical cough (for lack of a better analogy) that's become a habit, played over and over again. I hope one day he'll start to ween it out of his style.

Was just reading through this thread again and was struck by the comments that both Sonny Landreth and Derek Trucks have a sense of musical community, their performances are really band efforts, not just a hot guitarist in front of a good band. This is also something I get from Robben Ford's music - he not only chooses to play with excellent musicians, he really enjoys playing with them and watching them shine.
