Some gear talk (Elizabeth, don't get pissed off please Smile ...):

Recently, Robben changed his 59/JB pickup combo into a PG/59b combo.

I never liked the JB on my guitars (I am currently using a 59b incidently) but Robben used to get an excellent tone out of it.

I've heard what Gene Baker, Daved and S.Duncan had to say about this, but I was interested what you guys and girls thought about this.

Any comments?

bye,

Very Happy Very Happy

Very Happy Marin, there must be something wrong with me, but I am beginning to notice the guitars much more than before. No, I don't think I will become a gear head, but my son has been giving me some mini lessons on how the whammy bar functions! Laughing

My favorite "gear" to watch will always be a musician's hands, especially Robben's.

p.s. Chris Cain tonight (JJ's)...John Scofield tomorrow (Yoshi's.) Cool

I have a JB in the bridge of my 335 and it absolutely rips. The trick with that hot of a pickup is to not get it up too high close to the strings. It works really well in that guitar.

I have also been dissappointed by the JB in bridge position, tried it out in several guitars. Can it be that there are good and bad ones?

I have a Baker RF with a '59 N and a Custom 5 in the Bridge. The C5 is not quite as bright as the JB and has a tad less gain. It's worth a try.

Really?

I've ordered one of those to replace my 59b. My current problem is that I have to keep my neck 59 low so I get the right balance with the 59 bridge. I would like to raise the neck pickup and not lose the 59 bridge flavour.

How does the C5 compare to the 59b.

Thanks, Laughing

Marin,

You might have the opposite situation with the C5. It took some experimentation to raise the '59 N and lower the C5. However, a nice balance is easily achieved. Man, what a contrast in tone between the two pups.

I have not tried, or heard, a '59 B. When I read that RF's new config was a PG in the neck and a ' 59 in the bridge, I thought it was a misprint. I also have not seen or heard of a PG in the neck up until now. I have only seen them in the bridge. In fact, my daughter's Strat clone has a PG in the bridge.

I also have a BJC Spuce top/Mahogany body with an Ebony board over Mahogany that currently has DiMarzio VVs. I am thinking of experimenting with another pup config. Any suggestions? My RF is different (as you know) in that it has a Spruce/Alder and Ebony/Maple combo.

I haven't been able to find a set of pups like I like in my Baker RF (alder/spruce), so I ordered the PGn and 59b to try. I'll post the results here after I get them. But it can take 3 or 4 months to order pups from Japan, so it will be a while. Sad

Hmmm.....well, the BJC is chambered, right? My guitar is similar and has a lot of bass and treble and slightly less mids than a full-bodied mahogany guitar (Les paul, for instance). On the Seymour Duncan side, I would recommend either the Pearly Gates model (neck+bridge) or PG neck + CustomCustom (if you want the same balance as with the 59/C5 combo). These pickups are AlnicoII type compared to Alnico5's of the 59/C5 combo. They are slighty warmer (they can still scream though) and could compensate the response of the chambered body. Another valid alternative are the Seth Lover Pickups (which have cool nickel covers).

If you're into brighter sounds, just stick to the 59/C5.

my 0,02?

bye,

marin

Marin,

The Seths are always a good set to consider. I have a pair in my Baker B1H and they're the cat's meow. I used to own a Don Grosh Chambered Custom with Seths, and I was quite pleased.

Your PG(n), Custom Custom(b) combo is another worthy idea. The Robben Ford model now has the Spruce/Mahogany combo and the PG (n). I'll go to the SD to see if they have an audio sample of the Custom Custom. I would prefer to have some variety between my RF and BJC Sprucetop. BTW, Baker designates all of their Chambered models with a 'C' at the end. Thus, BJC for Baker Junior Chambered.

Thanks.

I had the customcustom for a while and it's a real mellow pickup for the bridge. It distorts really well. I took it out since it was tonally similar to the 59 neck so the middle position got dull, but with a PG it should work well (both A2 pickups).

By the way, apparently the PG that Fender used to put on Strats is a PG+ and is different from the standard PG (it's more hot and harsh).

bye,

marin
