Just like at Robben's shows, you won't be able to stretch your arms out without hitting a guitar player. At least on the Thursday shows, when the full time guys can get out of their gigs.

Fortunately for me:
1. I'm small, so my arms don't have to stretch too far. Smile
2. I don't mind bumping into guitar players Wink, and
3. I'm on vacation, so I can do a Thursday night show with no guilt! Cool

Cool

one more sleep...

Very Happy

Will be a long time until we ever see Larry here though. In an interview I read last year he all but ruled out *ever* touring here. Guess the economics of touring here (product costs vs geography vs population) are a little against us Crying or Very sad.

Larry was smokin last night at Yoshis. The crowd was on it's feet after every song. He even managed to breathe life into Miles of Smiles with an incredibly tasty quiet solo on the acoustic. Otherwise he played the old trusty 335 all night. What a lesson in tone production. He used all the swith postions and the volume pedal to come up with different amounts of overdrive, playing with his fingers, the pick, both at once, and just milking the most incredibly wonderful sounds out of the guitar. Mostly clean or mildly overdriven. I took a look and his Dumble was set much the same as Robben's, Bright and Deep off, Rock, input gain around half, a bit more treble and less bass but he is using a different speaker, and the OD section about halfway on both in and out. Maybe Alexander sets these things up for folks voiced the way they like them with everything set in the middle and the artists just tweak everything up of down a notch or two depending on how they are feeling.

At one point, he explained to the audience that he had found himself without a major lable contract and thought about what he wanted to do before he found himself constrained by another one. "How about a blues record with a horn section". "Something where I might be able to smile every night". Well, he was definetly smiling last night and the crowd felt and appreciated it.

Any bay area folks, if you can, catch this. I even ran into some regular straight ahead blues folks in the audience. Everyone came away with a lesson. In between songs, Larry asked how many musicians were in the room and half the audience raised their hand. I yelled out "ONE!" and the folks in front of us laughed. Actually there were at least eight. The tightest band I have ever seen. You could have recorded it in ProTools or something and every beat would line up perfectly between instruments. Amazing. Marc Russo on sax, although he played tenor most of the night he did pull out the alto on of all things "Tenor Madness". Larry's son, Travis was on bass and was so tight and solid I couldn't imagine it being done better by anyone. Until Larry introduced him, I just thought he was some topline session guy.

Inspiring.

He played "Josie" and "Minute by Minute" and "Last Night" and "Smiles and Smiles" and bunches of stuff from the latest blues album. Two encores...lots of interaction with the audience. Fantastic!

His Dumbles and guitars were on fire, as was the entire band. The drummer was mind-blowing, full, rich horn section (including Mark Russo, another sax player, trumpet and trombone...KILLER,) and a magician on keyboards.

We were mesmerized by how totally TIGHT the band was. Everyone took turns, they all looked like they were having a blast, and Larry took it down to the softest, most muted harmonics, straight through to loud and raucous.

During one very quiet solo on an amplified acoustic (I thought acoustic meant no amplifier???) the notes were so sweet and pure it almost hurt, and the audience was absolutely silent as Carlton led us through the dance.

I had such a good time! Embarassed
love, elizabeth

oh yeah, Larry wore clean, white tennies. Smile

What about that while Miami Vice linen jacket with the sleeves pushed up? He's been wearing that for 10 years or more Laughing

He wore a jacket???? I only notice shoes... he was wearing a jacket? Well, whaddya know? I did notice the black tape on his amplified acoustic guitar. It had an incredibly sweet sound, and he coaxed some amazing volume modulation and flying finger moves from it.
