Mike is using only a Sunburst Strat with whammy, thru a marshall with F/X rack and lotsa pedals. I'll give more detail after the startup dust settles. |
Tyler or Fender? As always thanks Daved! Got the LP info... |
What do I win for the correct answer?
It's a sunburst Suhr. |

Hey, I'm not just guessing. It's a sunburst Suhr with two Suhr humbuckers. |

Sorry, Juspassin'... wrong!
Mike says he DOES have the Suhr you speak of, but this one is a '68 Fender Strat. _________________ B C-ing U!

Hey, don't worry about it - if it's a 68 Start it's not pre-CBS ;-)))) _________________ "Creativeness often consists of merely turning up what is already there. Did you know that right and left shoes were only thought up a little more than a century ago?" - Bernice Fitz-Gibbon 1894-1982 |

Actually, 68 is very early CBS, but they wouldn't have had enough time to mess with it yet. I used to go there once a month in 68 to have blown JBL's replaced in my Twin (don't ask...). |

In 1986, when I was living in Italy, a friend GAVE me a 1966 Telecaster ... Please don't ask me where it is now. _________________ "Creativeness often consists of merely turning up what is already there. Sorry to hassle you about Landau's sound, Daved. So it was a Strat , with Suhr V60 pick ups? I'm thinking of ordering those pick ups for my SRV Strat. Anybody familiar with them?
Of course, Mike's amplification and outboard gear contribute a great deal to his tone, but I really do hear the guitar's resonance in most of his stuff, especially with Karizma and Burning Water. What do you think Daved?
Finally, how does Robben's sound and Mike's sounded together? I usually don't like the sound of 2 guitars together. But in this case, I imagine there is a nice contrast between the 2 styles and tones. I really hope they'll release a live thing of these shows. A DVD! (One could dream!).

Robert Cray - Young Bob - as a guest?! Excellent. I was listening to Don't Deny Your Love the other day and thinking what a great song this would be for Cray to cover. I know a lot of you people out there salivate over the pairings of RF and Landau, EJ, and other crank and wank monsters, but give me someone like Cray any day - and get down and play some sweet funky soul. |

Wow! That never occurred to me before, but you're dead right. Robert Cray would be a perfect compliment to "Don't Deny Your Love." Bravo! Good out-of-the-box thinking on that one! I would love to hear him cover that song. |

Don't need to know where the friend is, but where is that Tele now? |

What is the exact tone you are after? Suhr has two flavors of pups...V60s and V60LP. I own a Tyler Landau Strat that has the V60Lps. I also own a 63 Fender Strat and a home made Strat with Callaham Lindy Fralin pickups. They are all different animals. What amp do you play through and do you use pedals? If so which ones. What is your holy grail tone?
Then I can help you.... _________________ www.hendersounds.com

Hi Dave,
Thanks for your input, really appreciate it. I'm basically a jazz/jazz fusion player, so I need a wide variety of tones, from funky blues to high gain during a gig. For years my main "jazz" sound has been my trusty blond Gibson ES175, with a Fender Twin RI 2X12. I'm pretty much happy with this combination.
Here's the thing, unless it's a straight ahead jazz gig, I would always have to bring a solid body electric along for all the rock/blues/gain sounds. I've been going back and forth between 2 axes: a Fender SRV or a 60's CIJ Fender Tele. Each has its' own unique pros and cons. Feel wise, I like the SRV better, but tone wise I like the Tele.
Here's where the pick up dilema comes in: I thought about looking for a neck for my SRV, something that would give me more of that Tele snap and punch, while still having that jazzy bottom. the stock Texas specials has a good throaty growl to it when you roll off the tone, very cool for those big bends ala Landau or Hendrix semi-distorted r&b voicings. It just doesn't have the same midrange output as the Tele, doesn't cut through.
For the Tele, i've been looking into the Callaham you suggested awhile back. I'm still skeptical about the neck, I prferred the thickness of the SRV compared to the much thinner radius of the Tele.
For my jazz sound , it's usually straight into the Twin. For electric tones I run a POD Version 2 as a preamp, Ibanez Tubescreamer TS9 RI, and I throw in a Vox wah and a whammy pedal once in awhile at gigs.
Hard to answer the Holy grail sound, though, but I'll take a stab at it. for me : Robben's Tele sound with Landau's Strat growl , with Ed Bickert's jazz bite in the clean sounds.
