I discovered an interesting miking technique at the Kimock show. He's a real sound freak so I figured it was worth a try here. He puts the 57 off axis so that it's almost parallel to the cone coming in from the edge, kind of pointed at the dust cap. Then there was a LD condensor straight on. Following Harvey Gerst's 3:1 rule against phase cancellation, I pulled the condensor back about 3 feet to get a more integrated sound off the cabinet. There is no eq or compression on anything. The SM57 track has some reverb and the condensor track has some slap (116ms of course Smile ). The two tracks blended together really nicely.

This is a great tip! THANKS! I am getting some tones from that off axis 57 that are just killer......really KILLER!

Oddly enough, from the pictures on Kirk's site, I think we both have Digidesign Digi 01 setups.

I thought I saw a post by justpassinby regarding the bit on Robben's tape about playing the song by ear. But it seemed to disappear. I'll see if I can get this question in at the Ojai clinic. It could be interesting to pin Robben down on how well he understood this song. I have a feeling it served his purposes on the tape to say he played it by ear. He was advocating "let your ear be your guide". We've been discussing this in the Theory Corner and it's an interesting balancing act. Particulary with a song like this where it helps to have some reference points to be aiming at as the song moves around under you.

Yes. I did post on that subject, but I took it down soon afterward because it didn't really contribute anything new and because I intend to review the video in the next couple of days to see exactly what he said, verbatim. Robben has a history of saying important (to us) things that can be misinterpreted or misunderstood (case in point: Robben's clinic statement about the "Banzai - I don't quite remember the name of it but it's all I need to get my signature sound- pedal").

Hey gang, my first post here on the message board. I'm a fairly recent convert to Robben fandom, but have really enjoyed reading the posts here--everything from comments on Robben CD's, to Daved's insight, to all the great theory and gear posts. I'll try to do a full "Introductions" section post later, but first....

I finally got around to registering because I wanted to say thank you to our "Starship Captain" for posting the Revelation backing track and chart. I've been working through this a bit via the Blues and Beyond DVD, and this stuff will be a huge help.

I had been struggling a bit to accurately chart out the full structure of the tune from the info on the DVD (turns out I almost had it sussed out), hadn't found the time yet to work out the melody by ear, and hadn't even begun to start working on a backing track. All of that was solved in just a few posts, so thanks!

I'd love to get around to posting my own take on this at some point, but that's a ways off. At my level, it'll take me a while just to get to the point of playing the melody fluently. Them *maybe* I'll worry about trying to play something of my own on this.

And keep those "theory posts" coming folks--you've already cleared up a couple of things from Blues and Beyond that had me scratching my head.

Tom

Kirk,

Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

HUGE thanks for posting your clip (nice work!) and equally huge thanks for posting the backing track. I spend a fair amount of time live (and practice) playing with midi files so this is really nice to have, although not likely to get much of an airing live. Sad

The thing that I really like about this tune is that you can - as many have already mentioned - make as much or as little of the solo as you want. I've never been one to really make changes very well, so this tune is a great vehicle to stretch out a little. It's not as if you need to be able to play "Giant Steps" to get through this tune - the changes in Revelation have a really nice flow to them, so it's easy to work it as a blues tune, close your eyes and back yourself to find a little bit extra for the changes.

What I find works for me solo-wise (and my way of thinking) is to either:
a) play it fairly straight with a G Blues
b) Use a G blues, but with subtle changes to the scale especially with respect to the third and seventh. e.g. alternate between using a B flat and a B depending on the chord (or mood!); change the F for an F sharp (in the case of the B7 chord for instance) or drop it to an E (for the Em or C7 chords).

I find this sort of approach works really well for me in being able to work the changes and get some nice flavour into the tune without stretching my brain too much. (I'm only just starting to get into working diminished scales etc but still have a way to go with this!).

Cool

Chris

Just looked at the DVD, Robben said he PROBABLY diden't know the chords when they recorded Revelation. But i get the feelinf that he means that he diden't know how to do a great rhytm part put i assume he new the the underlying structure quite well. As he says, much like a sax player can't play rhythm but certiantly know what the changes are.
I will have to learn this Cool , Just watching Robben move his hand is a revelation..
