Slide guitar anyone?

Just finished a new original tune. Yet another tune about my Internet Boom days and the insanity of it all!

This one features a new recording rhythm section that I am working with - Chris Filben on Bass and Jim Norton on drums. So we are recording the rhythm tracks live - Bass, Guitar and V-Drums.

Here's the gear rundown:

Slide Guitar - Tyler Strat > AC Booster > 1965 Deluxe Reverb > SM57 > ProTools > mic modeler plugin

Rhythm Guitar - Tyler Strat > RC Booster > 1965 Deluxe Reverb > SM57 > ProTools > Rotary speaker plugin

Crunch Rhythm Guitar - Fender CS Nocaster > Two Rock Opal - Lead Channel > Pro Tools

Twang Tele Intro Lick- Fender CS Nocaster > Two Rock Opal - Clean Channel > Pro Tools

Please check it out!

Very cool, Kirk! Those background vocals are killer! Nice layering of textures and - the most essential element - a great song. But those background vocals are killer! How'd you do dat?

Yeah, bring those background vocals up. Killer Nashville harmonies. The the Jorgansenesque background guitars fit perfectly.
On my system, the mix seems biased to the left but the slide is really spacious in the middle, what plug in's did you use on that?

Thanks!

The background vocals are just simple triadic stuff. My bass player sang two parts double tracked, my drummer sang two parts double tracked and I sang 3 parts double tracked. All the parts are slightly panned around the mix with the lower parts panned left with the lead vocal and those higher parts panned to the right. I sub mixed this all down to a stereo sub mix and added some delay, compression and reverb. It sounds big!

It was a lot of fun. I need to work more backup vocals into my stuff. It adds a nice texture.

Thanks for listening!

BTW I spent a week dialing in that mix!

I like to pan things around the mix and give every part its own space.

That chorused Tyler strat rhythm part is panned left. It also has a little whammy shake on it. If you notice in the chorus it rythmically goes in and out of the beat - Turing the accents around.

Did you notice that the Tele lick is 7 beats long...really weird!! ;)

The Slide is the Tyler Strat on the Humbucker pickup > AC Booster > Deluxe Reverb > SM57 > Pro Tools > mic modeler > reverb > delay> EQ. It panned to the middle and rides up and down in volume around the vocals.

Also notice that the drummer totally flips the beat around and back at the end before the fade. We had a lot of very interesting rhythmic stuff happening on this track.

The tune is about an Internet startup 1995 to 1997 time frame. So the rhythmic craziness is a metaphor for the way that that felt - very in and out of control but exciting all at the same time! It was an incredible time in my life.

Harmonically we're talking 3 chords....and mostly hanging out on the 1 chord.

You can tell. Not easy, as I'm finding out, to see what things will sound like away from the workstation. And keeping all those layers under control. After working so hard to come up with a killer Tele tone, it must be hard to stuff it down in the mix where it belongs. Maybe this is where producers help. They didn't pour their hearts into the part so they can chop it out here and bury it under that there, so that it all works with the song. Kudos for a professional job.
