For those who may be interested, the Yellowjackets are performing 4 shows, 2 each this coming Friday and Saturday nights, May 28/29, at the Sculler Jazz Club in Boston. Tickets are $20, or $58 for the dinner/show package. This happens to be the weekend before Robben Ford comes to town. Hmmmmm.... Question Idea Exclamation

Heard from a reliable source, no Robben with the Yellowjackets.

I saw the Yellowjackets for the first time on Saturday night.

The show was at a very small jazz club on the Boston/Cambridge line. It was not a great venue, but the sound was good.

It was a full house, maybe a few of empty seats, and a lot of enthusiastic fans as well as some students.

The Yellowjackets played entirely from the Mint Jam release (except for the encore). The 60-minute concert included 7 songs:

Les is Mo
New Jig
Motet
Runferyerlife
Song for Carla
Evening News
Revelation (encore)

Motet featured a wonderful bass solo by Jimmy Haslip. Jimmy is a lot of fun to watch because he is so expressive when he plays. You can almost feel him reaching for the next note in his mind.

Runferyerlife had an interesting drum solo by Marcus Baylor. Bob Mintzer (sax) and Russell Ferrante (piano/keys) both played with a lot of passion and finesse.

I had never listened to Mint Jam before the show, so it was all new music to me. I had a great time. Listening to them play Revelation for the encore was very cool -- especially since i've been listening to that song a lot since Kirk's Revelation thread. There was no guitar... but it's such a great song !

There were 3 other shows over the weekend. I was wondering if Mint Jam was featured at every show, or if they played from Time Squared at the later show. Did anyone see the later show?

I was also at the early show on Saturday night, and was very impressed with the music. I've never heard Yellowjackets music before, only heard of them here in this website. I wound up buying the Mint Jam (double) cd after the show and listened to it all weekend long. Really good stuff.

I agree with Road Warrior, that Jimmy Haslip is fun to watch especially during the drum solo. It was like he knew every beat and offbeat that was about to happen. And, does Russ Ferrante ever stop smiling?! It's a pleasure watching a musician love what he's doing so much. And, his smile was contagious... Very Happy All four musicians we fun to watch and listen to. With the wonderful dinner before the show, it made for a truly memorable night.
