Hello Bay Area folks. That icon of South Bay blues, JJ's Blues Lounge, is up for sale. After 30 years, June Stanley is packing it in. Nobody knows if it will stay open or turn into what.
I will be leading a trio there this month, Wednesday the 23rd from eight till midnight. I know it's a school night but it would be great to see some folks come out. Maybe someone will get inspired to buy the place.
The great thing about doing a mid week gig is being able to snag world class musicians for the band.
On bass will be Endre Tarczy. His name was in here recently as part of Garth's working band. Endre has played with everyone from Chris Cain to Robben, and in lots of other genres as well. At the recent Fender/Roscoe Beck clinic, Roscoe kept joking about having Endre demonstrate the two handed walking bass/chord comp thing (no joke, Endre can do this just as well).
On drums will be Bryant Mills, the other great drummer, besides his buddy Dennis Chambers, to come out of Baltimore (oh, and Hilary too). Bryant is an ambidexterous force of nature, often playing multiple patterns at the same time, while laying down the deepest grooves you ever heard. He was with Hooker up until the end but has played with just about everybody.
A little pop, some fusion, a little straight ahead, and lots of blues. Hope to see you there. _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

Don't know anything about the venue, but in trying to check it out discovered that it's web site is dead and gone. Hope this doesn't mean that the only is shutting everything down and just selling an empty shell (and a lease). Who knows what might pop up once the deal's closed? Disco? (Yick.)
Anyway, have a great gig. Sorry I won't be up in the area that week. _________________ - BlueRunner |

Sounds like a great gig, A. Can you post a set list after the fact?
(Will you be wearing those shoes from the picture?) |

Aeolian,
So, can you tell us how you are preparing for the show? I know that Endre and Bryant are world class guys who don't require much rehearsal to shine, but what material are you doing? Who selected / arranged it? What is the actual preparation involved? I'm really curious about the amount of time spent getting ready. |

Time? What is that? Isn't that what my computer was supposed to save for me?
More seriously, even though Endre and Bryant belong there, fortunately for me, this isn't Saturday at the Filmore, it's Wednesday at JJ's. There are kind of house arrangements of lots of blues songs that everyone here knows. Many courtesty of our friend Robben from his old days on the peninsula. Various folks bring in new tunes and over time everybody learns them. For instance, Wedemeyer started playing The Chicken and now everybody plays it. My contribution was Satriani's Always with Me, which Terry Hiatt did an amazing Hellecastersish version of on his last album. Then you steal arrangements from other folks. For instance I do Mercy, Mercy similarly to Garth, and steal a couple of arrangements from Terry's first album, which Endre played on.
After that, it's a matter of what they call Homework. You get a list of songs from someone, and sit down and learn/remember them. Over the years of playing occasionally with Endre, we've given each other tapes of songs to learn. One time Endre gave me a tape with a note, "10,000 extra points for learning song number 5" which turned out to be a Bach Fugue! Then on stage, you listen, pay attention, and go with it. The great thing about playing with guys like this, is that they listen to the music and have the chops and resources to contribute exactly what is needed. Since this is blues/jazz/fusion, it is an improvisational medium. The songs are just the launching point. My goal here is to have fun and let these guys loose. We'll see what happens. _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.
