A bunch of us were chatting the other day and Kirk recommended Callaham parts for Strat's and Tele's. I have an American Standard which has a brass bridge plate. Normal Tele's have a steel bridge plate which affects the magnetic field around the pickup. What do you know? Callaham makes a replacement with the weird American Standard hole layout made from heavy steel. Suposed to be thicker than the vintage plates and does have the sides intended to hold the cover no one uses that hit your fingers.
Here's a slow blues to give an idea of how the bridge pickup gets tamed. This is with a Texas Special which is slightly overwound and comes out a bit darker than I'd like. Maybe I'm ready for a nice stock Fralin or Barden in there.
Hard to play the blues sitting by yourself in the garage but here it is:

Hey A, great stuff (slow blues are always harder to play, in my mind anyway). I could hear a bit of the old Roy Buchan tone going down.
Bottom line is, I personally wouldn't change a thing. unmistakenly a tele, with a nice clear, but rounded tone.
Where can i find your garage then......?
All the best,

A, very fine playing - thanks for the listen. If you need an audience in the garage, I'd be happy to drop by anytime.

I put Kinman pickups in my Tele (and Strat) and that was it for me. There's no going back to noisy single coils.

Good question. I'll have to check on that and get back to you.

Funny, the opening lick is stolen from John's Blues on Roy Buchanan's euphonious album. Roy opens with some cool country licks by himself and than uses this lick to kick off a slow blues in D (I think) with the most killer screaming Tele tone I've ever heard. I can just see a pile of dimed Twins rattling the studio window.

JD, careful, you and Liz may get pressed into background vocal service. _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

I believe I volunteered to listen, not to sing. Good thing you put that laughing face at the end of the line, I don't think you want to hear me sing. |

Gee, sorry to keep jumping into threads a month after the fact!
I just checked out the Callaham site...what do you know, they're just an hour or so away from me.
Are you guys familiar with Jay Monterose and his Vintique "world's finest Telecaster® style stainless steel replacement parts?"
He used to be local here in the DC area...he musta recently moved to NJ (maybe Callaham's ran him out!)
Anyway, he's got a pretty good rep around here (was Gatton's techie) and his stuff seems pretty nice to me.
Thought you Telecaster® freaks might be interested!

A couple of years agos my wife bought me the Blue Floral and Pink Paisley Tele's to the collection. ( I am a Tele Freak)
As far as pickups, I ended up putting a 52' reissue in the neck position and a Nocaster Bridge pickup (with zinc plate) in the Floral. All I can say is that this is a SMOOTH sounding guitar. Everyone who has played this guitar simply loves the tone. I can heartily recommend this combination.
I am thinking of putting the complete Nocaster set in my Rosewood Tele. The stock pickups are a little weak. This set was not available when I was upgrading the Blue guitar.
As far and the Paisley, I installed a set of Texas Tele's. I figured that a Pink guitar better have guts. They are definately over the top.
As far as tele's in general, I think the Tele responds better than most any other guitar with respect to rolling back the tone control. Just seems to take the "bite" out subtlly.

I've just put some Broadcaster Kinmans in my Tele. They're very midrangy and have this "rough" attitude to them. Very bluesy.
I haven't test-recorded the cleans yet.
Just to give you a general idea here's a whacky fusion track I did with them:

Marin, Is that the Ed G. funky backing? How did you come up with that head? It's fabulous! If I can figure it out, I want to try and steal it
Great playing as usual. The Tele sounds foward but solid. No ice pick there either. _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

Yep, that's Ed's backing which I downloaded from the Gpage.
I wanted a jazzy riff for an opening, I was thinking of something like Sco meets Hancock....I repeated it 4 times so no one would think that I was throwing in notes at random. :D
Playing in 9/8s is obvious in hindsight. I found it initially tricky but then I remembered having already played in this rhythm 16 years ago with a jazzband.
Thanks, the pickups are quite usefull, I am growing on to them. I might combine the Barden neck with the Kinman bridge.
