This idea was once stated in an interview with Joe Satriani, for what i recall he said : the way you play shapes the whole woody thing to ring for , that's why he has some favorite guitars.
As a romantic i am really up with this and i like to think i am infesting my 2000 Korean Epi with MY tone , and i think it's coming .
Soon i'll put a JB in treble and a Vintage 57 in Neck.
Then i will continue to hurt the wood.
BTW, the pickups may be stock, but someone had to replace the leads with four conductor wire in order to hook up that push pot coil tab switch.
Seems to indicate the possibility that: A: The guitar was "pre owned" (as opposed to new and hanging in the store for 4 years). B: The pickup could be any brand, i.e. one that perhaps comes with original 4 conductor wire.
Interesting, the inquiries continue. I guess I will be awaiting Daved's further investigation.

Actually, interestingly enough, Robben and I DO feel that that ax hung on their wall for a very long, long time as there was a (and still remains a tiny bit of) hard to remove film & dust on the upper sides (picture the guitar hanging) of the pickups, bridge, body, and headstock. _________________ B C-ing U!

I'm not sure what the story is, as far as the wiring of the pickups goes, in that Robben had a push/pull pot installed for his coil splitting, which he found he did not like because it was cumbersome.
So I installed the push/push switch while in Japan (supplied to me by the very helpful and friendly folks at Hoochies in Tokyo, thank you very much). As I remember it at the time (being unfamiliar with what Gibson uses as "standard"... oddly enough, in my 20+ years of doing this, I have worked with almost no artists that heavily endorse Gibson), the internal wiring all looked pretty stockly unmodified so I just assumed that the pickup leads were original.
I'll try to remember to clear this up with Robben and get back to ya. _________________ B C-ing U!

I can't agree more, I have a push/pull pot on my Godin LGXSA and I just find the damn thing definitely not practical at all. A push/push switch might indeed be a good solution as I would not have to modify the guitar itself. Any idea where I could find one anyone ?

Okay, one of you guys who was there when he picked this thing out, are you going to jump in and clear up the confusion? Or just leave us all guessing. _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.
