Not only this week i've lost a friend, and a true music mate, this month i've been fine for the amount of my monthly income for drunk drivin while i were not even drunk, and believe me ii know . I am not going to spray over a lot of other things getting me on nerves .

BUT , i have just witnessed Birelli Lagrene (god bless) & John Mc Laughling(down with the dorkies) butchering Voodoo child on acoustics guitars on a live music show on regular french tv.

Not only Mac laughlin' is so wealthy that he can afford to live in monaco ( like a big sissy old lady, or like the drummer of scorpions) What a shame for rock'nroll, but he still needs to stick a gipsy genius to get more money
WHY these guys have to slaughter My JIMI????????????
I'm really pissed off. THis Mac Laugh with his fucking 3 DVD , i mean i don't need 2 DVD out of 3 to learn a major scale.
I don't mind about Bireli , he was a friend of Jaco . And i know a bit of what's going on.

I agree, there are too many hacks who think they have to play Jimi, or play like SRV playing like Jimi, and so on. Do something different with his tunes, please! Two of my fave versions of his songs are Pete Anderson (Dwight Yoakum's guitar player and a tele master if there ever was one) doing Fire as a slowed down blues shuffle - very cool; and Joan Osborne doing Axis:Bold as Love. I just picked this cd up the other day after hearing her version of "Only You Know and I Know" (Dave Mason, EC, Delaney and Bonnie), I thought my daughter might like it, but I have been digging it, too. Very good band and a consistent groove to all the songs.

Left - what do you think are the best covers?

I am just glad I got to see Buddy years ago before he went all Hollywood on us.

On the Mclaughlin CD set - any of ya'll want to kick in 10 bucks each and we can share a copy? I would be interested, but there is no way I am going to shell out that much cash. Damn.

) after our gig told me that Mr. George Bush and Mr. Tony Blair (on guitar and backing vocals) were singing the WMD blues together with the "Right wing Conservative Blues Band"

featuring awesome pianist Dr. Condolisa Ryse. He suggested that we have to cover this song, could be a very popular one.

And remember, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. My little blues band does many Robben, Jimi, SRV tunes (some pretty badly,) but we do them because we adore the music.

What is it with Hendrix's music that inspires this? I know several folks who refuse to play along with Hendrix songs at jam nites unless they really know the guitarist. Maybe his tunes have been the basis of far too much loud wanking over the years. Last night I stumbled into some folks I hadn't seen in awhile doing a jam session. Got sucked into it just as some guy was plugging a million pedals into some small solid-state Fender. I was playing my friends Gibson/Marshall rig (which was kind of fun for a change-up). Anyway, this guy launches into Red House, which has been done to death many times over. It's everything I can do to get him to quiet down at the beginning of my solo so there's some room to set up some blues. The instant I hit one loud note, it's back to full on power chords and no space. Maybe that's why Hendrix played trios Very Happy

If you give one of these guys a stomp box and say to dial in a Hendrix sound, they will inevitably crank in way more distortion than Hendrix ever used. In fact many classic Hendrix solos are nearly completely clean. Given my buddies master volume Marshall, I couldn't help it. But is it permissible to play sweep licks over Foxy Lady? Laughing

There a thread/rant over on the GearPage about some tribute to Shawn Lane where folks didn't think the players were up to copping the original. Hendrix was a huge influence on me when he hit the scene, and I'll occasionally play Little Wing or the Wind Crys Mary cause they're great songs and I'll try to get the essence of what Jimi put in them, but I'm a completely different player now than I was in '69, so there's going to be something different about how the song comes out as well.

I think Jimi's tunes are standards. People butcher starndards all the time... There are standards in Jazz, Blues and Rock.

Then their are artist's (very few BTW) that can make standards their own....

What difference does it make where John McLaughlin lives? And how much money he has? If he was penniless and living in a cardboard box, would that somehow make his instruction videos OK? And Hendrix must have had some nerve to rip-off poor folk performer Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower".

I was actually having a similar discussion on Saturday night... played here at the Casino in Melbourne and the band before us (similar lineup to us - sequenced trio) had an extremely good guitarist, only let down by the fact he used the Pod Dual Rectifier sound for just about everything.

It's one thing to give songs a certain amount of your own interpretation (and when you play with a sequencer you *have* to do something to breathe life into the performance), but it was so over the top it was just wrong. Almost got away with it during a few Abba songs, but 'Unchained Melody' with pseudo Dual Rectifier ain't right.

As for Jimi, some players think it's all about Wild Thing and setting your guitar on fire (literally and figuratively speaking!). But people forget about songs like Little Wing and some of his blues stuff - often clean (but fat) and tasteful playing too. Can anyone say "Melodic Intent"?

Speaking of Little Wing, I don't mind The Corrs version. I also like Sting's version (sorry Blob!) if nothing else for Hiram Bullock's guitar work. I've seen Sting butcher Purple Haze live though and am a big fan of Dominic Miller's work but this just didn't do it for me.
