It amazes me how this fantastic concert, and I mean fantastic concert, has not been released "officially" on DVD. Someone was kind enough to give me a copy of this tiger walk performance and it just blows me away everytime i watch it. Each watch I get something new from it which just inspires me to practice more and more!! Why has it not been released? Id happily pay good money for it if is was released!!!! Anyone else also seen this concert?? For me Tiger Walk shows what Robben is all about.

Hi J.Hanks , i must admit it's one of the best performances i've ever seen .
Novak is quite impressive , they all play with fire.
May be it'll be out in TEN years.
Have you heard about this Brazil TV Live ( the one where they play moonchild blues ) , this is a very good one too.
I don't want to throw oil on fire once more , but at one point it's "normal" for a fan to look for what he wants even if the material is unofficial.
Plus where i live it's a real crusade to find officials DVD in stores.

That recording is awesome, even better than the official Ohne filter DVD.
When I first saw it, I felt like standing up and dancing (which I did ).
Great backing band and Robben relaxed and at is best.
(for Elizabeth: he's wearing a cool black french-intellectual outfit)

That is an awesome performance!
Does anyone know who the bass player is? I saw him with Robben in Minneapolis and when he first walked on stage I expected to see him with a skateboard instead of a bass. I soon ate my words because the boy can play! |

I saw this band live, and have a VHS copy of the Ohne Filter show, and absolutely agree with the other posters on the quality and sheer soulfulness of this band.
On the acquisition of this material, keep in mind that anything broadcast on public airwaves is public domain material, from an IP/copyright perspective, and can be traded non-commercially. Robben surely is aware of this, both contractually and pragmatically, going into these gigs and I would think have no issues in his fan base trading them. (Not trying to stir up another dialogue on tape trading, unless someone feels strongly enough to start a different thread!)
Back to the question on the sidemen? Anybody have a rundown? Someone once mentioned they were Keith Richards' backup band, but when I asked at one of the clinics, Robben didn't go into any detail. He simply said that they were one of the best bands he had ever had the pleasure of playing with. _________________ - Mayer |

This is what Robbens web site cites:
Quote: | He recruited his dream rhythm section, drummer Steve Jordan and bassist Charley Drayton, who Ford first heard playing on Keith Richards solo albums ("I just loved the sound of the rhythm section. I wrote the music with these guys in mind, " he said.) and obtained the services of engineer Niko Bolas, who also worked on those same Keith Richards records, to co-produce the album with him.
|
I not sure whether he used the same guys to tour.

More quotes:

Your release Tiger Walk was real funky. Tell us about the making of that album.
RF: I really wanted to do something that was just fun, and not vocal-oriented. I didn?t want to be writing lyrics and singing. I loved that band from Keith Richards? records -- Charlie Drayton on bass, Steve Jordan on drums and Bernie Worrell on keyboards. I wrote the music for that band. I hired as producer -- he really engineered the record and made the phone calls -- great guy, good friend, Niko Bolas. He?s very good friends with all of those guys, so he called them and got their interest. It?s like a rock-R&B album.

I think the bass player is Chris Chainey. had never heard of him before, he really is great. Deron Johnson on keys, ex Miles Davis. He also played with Larry Carlton and Stanley Clarke ( Live at the Greek ), and he was sideman for Alanis Morissette at some point. I saw him first on TV with Miles , he was playing his ass off.
And then Gary Novak on drums, Chick Corea alumni ( among others ).
An incredible show this is indeed...a DVD version would really be welcome. |

Steve Jordan and Charlie Drayton were on the album and were part of Keith Richards Xpensive Winos (I think that's what they were called)backup band.
Robben used two main groups to tour in support of this album. I saw both of them. During the Yoshi's stand it was a bay area based group of Billy Johnson on drums, Myron Dove on bass, and Joe Heinman on keys. At the Filmore shows it was the other group mentioned here, with (Gary?) Novack on drums and a bass player and keyboardist I can't remember. One night of this was broadcast on KFOG and I have a tape somewhere that might have the names of the other guys on it. On both the show I saw, and even more so on the night that was broadcast, I thought everything sounded really rushed. Novak is obviously a great drummer (Chick Corea doesn't hire slugs) but I think he lost the essence of several songs with tempos that were too fast. For folks who've seen this video, I'm curious if the tempos are more like the original songs or if they blaze also. I know what you mean about the bass player and a skateboard. He was using an old P-Bass and a tube amp (an SVT with a smaller cab I think) and getting a really dull boomy sound. This was my first encounter with what came to be the modern "groove jam" style. Similar thing going on on Scofields "UberJam". The keyboard player also just used Robben's Wurllitzer and Korg. Real basic stuff in contrast to the more modern sound of the other group. _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

Could someone please take a moment to identify the subject video with a little more specificity? The date or even just the year of the broadcast would be helpful as would the identity of the producer or production company and/or the nationality of the original broadcaster (e.g., was this an Ohne Filter show?). Otherwise, the rest of us have no way of knowing what you are gloating about. |

When I saw this show is was long before I started paying attention to gear. I actually meant the bass player looked like he was 15 years old! I literally thought he was crew member until he strapped on the bass. That will teach me to assume. |

Jim,
Same thing. This seems to have become a popular thing. Young skater looking guys with baggy shorts, the bill cap, and old school equipment thumping out a groove. Some kind of Victor Wooten backlash I suspect. After watching Myron tear up the Yoshi's shows I kept thinking, "why is this guy there?". Little did I know Robben was on the vanguard of hiring acid jazzers. _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

Seems to be a European thing. They get to tape Ohne Filter shows, up here we get to tape an occasional KFOG radio show, and down there you get to go to the Baked Potato and watch them kick out the jams. I'd rather be gloating about that _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.
