Larry,

The C#dim is usually followed by Dm-G7/Cm-f7/Bbmaj7-Bb7/ebmaj7-ebmin7/Dm7-Db7/Cm7-B7. The Dm is the III chord and C# dim (C#EGBb) is equivalent to A7-9 (with no root). Its the V of III.

Its helpfull to break the diatonic sytem into 3 sounds : tonic , sub-dominant, and dominant. The I,III,and VI chords comprise the tonic sound. You can pretty much use these chords interchangeably. Thus you have the III (Dm)above subbing for the I chord preceded by its V (c#dim or A7-9) .

The IV and II (sub-dominant sound) and V and VII (dominant sound) are also interchangeable.
Hope this helps.... Keep in mind, when all else fails, Bb blues licks will always work over this progression.
