I've been reading these posts for a few years and as a passive contributor I have enjoyed the discussions. I'm also a RF fanatic!

I am an experienced player (25 years) looking to finally cross over into the promised "tone" land. Within a budget unfortunately.

I'm looking for advice on the Fuchs ODS 50 watt, or a Two Rocks amp - model yet undermined. I think the TR is more $$$$$$.

Any info on pricing would be helpful too.

I'm also concerned about reliability since I gig often and I'm hauling my gear in and out of cars, clubs, homes, studios..etc.......

How about customer service?????

I hear from a dealer in NY that Fuchs does not do any more mods, is that true? I currently use a Rivera with one Weber 1265 alnico 12" spkr, that I would love to have Andy Fuchs do a mod on it.

I'm also a Fender player, occasionally I'll use a LP or PRS, but am most happy with my Custom Shop Strat and Custom Shop Tele.

One final comment, I have found myself listening to SRV a lot lately....
I must say his tone is amazing and dare I say rivals Robbens IMHO!

If you look on TheGearPage, there are tons of threads about these types of amps. The most recent being: http://www.thegearpage.net/board/showthread.php?s=&threadid=44219&perpage=15&pagenumber=1
There are a few more options, and you can get some idea of how folks like each one. Course you have to remember that these things are a significant investment, and not many are going to say they didn't know what they were doing when they plunked down their four grand. Smile

Total - Which Rivera model and why/how would you want to mod it? Just curious.

tele-

It's a 55 w combo 1-12'' spkr. It's a great amp, and has served me well for 5 years, and sounds great most of the time, but it's a little on the harsh side, and I have to crank it to get it to really sing. I'm looking for a smoother fluid sound that's more responsive to my attack.

Are you familiar with Rivera amp and in particular this model? If so I'd like to hear your comments.

Thanks

Gerard

Maybe, set aside (or sell) the Rivera and get an old silverface Bandmaster or Bassman. Fuchs has a tech furiously chiping away at the backlog of mods and they may be able to take in more orders later in the year. A standard Fender is easier for them to mod, they know how all the wire routing and tube locations are going to play out. Moding something new takes more time to work things out and this sucks up Andy's time away from new product development and working on the amps he does have.

Remember, the Fuchs and TR mods are not tweaks or hot-rodding of the existing amps. They are replacing the guts of the amp with an entirely new design. Because of the existing transformers, you're stuck with certain voltages being what they are, which may be different than where a factory design might have them. But, you'll get the essential character out of any of them.

I have had zero problems with either of my Fuch's and the folks I know with TR's don't bother to take backups to gigs either. You should be fine from a reliability standpoint.

You can not go wrong with either amp! The customer service and reliability of both amps is all first rate. You need to play both amps.

The Two Rocks are ultra sensitive to your playing style. If you pick real hard, don't use a lot of dynamics and touch, then it's not the amp for you. If you do, you will freak!

I have been playing Two Rocks since 2000. I currently own two an Emerald 50 and an Opal! If you go to my website there are tons of clips both live and studio with both amps. They kill!

I also run the Two Rock Discussion page. We do live chats with the builders Joe and Bill every other week. The next live chat is tonight at 7pm PST. Please come join us and meet and speak with Joe and Bill and bunch of happy Two Rock owners. They will answer all you questions. You need to join the forum to participate in the chat!

Once I found Two Rock I stopped looking for amps!

Both are great!

If you are looking to save money, the Fuchs is less $. Make sure you ask for the Scott mods. These are the new values that nail the RF thing. The old values are good too, but the new are better. All new amps have them but the dealer inventory is old value. You definately need to ask and specify. The Scott mods.....

I've had both. I had one of the very early Fuch's mods of a Bassman head that was very good in the OD channel, but not quite what I wanted from the clean side. Again, this was a mod, not a production amp, and I know Andy makes a terrific amp that does clean and OD well.

I am now playing an Emerald 50 combo that does it all for me. The hype says that other of their models gets closer to the Robben tone, but what I get from my Em 50 is perfect for me. I bought mine used. That means Bill and Joe never made a dime from me. When it developed a problem (which I knew what it was and how to fix it) I spoke briefly with Bill on the phone, and he suggested I send it to them for repair and checkout. It was exactly what I thought, but Bill and Joe repaired it and checked it thoroughly and had it back to me in a week. Did I mention I bought it used and they made no money from my purchase? They also charged me nothing for the repair and turned it over in a week. *That* is customer service. If (OK when) I buy another amp, it will be a Two Rock, but I honestly don't think I'll ever need another amp. I gig without a backup, but I do carry a few spare tubes.

Hi Total:

Not too much personal experience with the Rivera, but in the past have considered them as a mid-level $$ alternative to the big money amps. I know people who use them in a studio and really love them - versatile and quiet. I also used a Rivera-designed Fender Super Champ for years in a steak house country gig I had many moons ago. What a great little amp - it could do anything I asked of it.

As far as the model, I would probably lean toward his 30 watt models, rather than the 55 like you have. Just seems a bit much these days if you are playing in clubs.

Good luck with your decision.
