To all of you that participate with English as a second (or third, or fourth) language, I want to compliment you on how well you do with writing (and I'm sure speaking) the English language. I've been to Europe several times, and I'm always amazed at how easy it is to communicate because so many of you speak English. I am the typical American that only speaks English, and I can't conceive of speaking another language, and I've tried hard to speak Spanish (living in southern California). My wife teaches in Prague every summer, and she has become quite proficient in speaking Czech.

It is truly a pleasure to be a part of this international community.

Well said, Tone. I just got back from a week in Germany and Sweden and had a most excellent time. Made to feel very welcome in spite of my feeble attempts at German. Music brings us all together: the groove is the international language!

Passion is the uniting force!

Every time I go to Europe I am amazed how nearly everyone speaks multiple languages and is willing to help a language deprived American!

Most of all I am amazed at how they love and respect the music I love... blues, jazz and fusion... and the masters that play it! There just seems to be greater appreciation over there as a whole.

The Internet Rocks!

Not just love and respect, but promote and make available. When I can find CDs in a little shop in Sweden that I have been looking for for years and have NEVER seen here in town I am just blown away. Great blues and jazz sections in the stores I went to in Berlin, too. Not to mention incredible book stores with better English language sections of some genres than Barnes and Noble, etc.

And don't get me started on the coffee and beer. OK, about the beer... Here I am in the hotel bar in Sweden, drinking Tuborg Gold on tap and damn near feeling like I am in heaven and this native Swede orders a Corona! I know the grass is always greener, but Corona??!! Yuck.

In his case, the glass was greener

abergdahl,
Are you anywhere near Notodden? Are you going to the blues festival there next week?

Totally agree. I also continually have suprising success with my 'rare, limited edition, & hard-to-find' CD shopping in Germany and Belgium.

Looks very much like the UK is on the same level as the States. There's precious little in the music shops here. But I remember walking into this amazing little record shop in Hersonnissos, Crete in 2000 and finding scores of Miles Davis CDs, as well as just about all of Tim Buckley's CDs. Now you would NEVER, EVER see that in most places in the UK. By the way, do we have any Tim Buckley fans around here? His voice still sounds absolutely incredible after all these years. Takes me right back to end of the sixties and art college. Ho hum....
