Have to agree with my gal, Hil, though this time around was a very strange & unusual trip.

With our schedule changing almost daily, missed flights, airline hassles (along with the total destruction of one of Dewayne's bags and contents, it looks like my workbox with guitar stands, specialty tools, 2 expensive Peterson strobe tuners, a large supply of Robben signature picks, about 30 sets of strings, our variac, etc. are now permanently in the hands of some baggage handler in Spain who felt he needed it more than we did), our van being broken into while taking a lunch break at an AutoGrill along the highway during our 7 hour drive to Rome resulting in some credit cards, several hundred dollars worth of currencies, and our promoter rep's computer being stolen, along with Dewayne's passport, CDs, camera, and a few other of our possessions (fortunately the musical equipment was all buried in the back with the suitcases and remained untouched)... we had a great time.

The food was great, the wine was great, the fans were great (except, maybe, for all the video cameras and flash photography... the Italians, in my experience anyway, are the most persistant in ignoring Robben's wishes in those matters, even with announcements in Italian, or Robben asking from the stage for them to stop, or me, myself, having to continually leave the stage to ask over and over that they be more respectful... Robben & I often wonder why audiences just don't get the idea when he gets fed up and turns his back to them or hides behind his amp during some of his best solos and playing... unfortunately depriving everyone from fully enjoying his performances.
Because of a few, so many have to lose out... such a shame. Crying or Very sad ).

Otherwise, we had a blast and the overall hospitality made for a very enjoyable visit.

Robben is talking of returning to Italy early next year for a good 4 to 6 weeks with this same group. Our Italian promoter has also expressed strong interest in bringing Jing Chi to Italy later this year, if he can work out the necessary details.

Hey, does anyone know if Professor Coryell (Larry) is still heading the music department at UCLA? I wonder how he happened to hook up with Robben in Italia?

Thanks for the great pics! Sounds like you had a great time. Hopefully Robben and Co. will be playing back here in Northern California soon.

Good to hear you guys had a great time anyway. I'm afraid all the crap you guys had to deal with would have left me with a less than positive feeling about the whole experience.

What can I say about the concert on Sunday night in Spilimbergo, except that it was a great concert! Robben played a great show, just a few pieces but intensely performed. This was the second time I saw Robben live and he was perfect, so stylish and cute, sometimes soothing and sweet... it was Robben, what else! The new italian funs mushroomed that night, I'm sure.
It was an amazing night, I loved Spilimbergo, I loved Piazza Duomo - what a lovely place! - I loved the band, I loved the folks - I was completely happy! I loved mosquitos in the moonlight... the moonlight... the moonchild... Shame on me, I did not recognize "Moonchild Blues"! Evidently, I was too excite. Or else, I have never even heared it. I'll mend my ways, I promise.
Instead, I took some marvellous pictures, strictly without flash Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy . See below for the best of them:

(It is a pity that I'm not sure if its Robben or Daved! Question )

I'll leave you now because I'm in transit from the beach to the mountains.

Thank you again Robben, thanks to all of you, and see you all next time in Italy!

ps Ciao Suzie, e' arrivato il pacco, e meraviglioooooso! Grazie!

In 1975 (I think) I saw a killer show at DAR/Constituion Hall in D.C., opening with a very hot Brecker Bros Band.

Next was Larry Coryell, who opened with an introspective acoustic number (I think he was playing an Ovation?)

Well, after the Breckers, the crowd was pretty wound up, not wanting to have any of this acoustic nonsense. They started booing, hissing, tossing cups, frisbees, etc. on stage.

Needless to say, Larry got pretty PO'ed. He stopped playing and gave the audience a verbal tongue-lashing, saying something like, "If you want electric music, I'll GIVE you electric music!!!"

He then strapped on his Les Paul and proceeded to shred. Very Happy

Which was good, since the headliners were RTF, fresh off their "Where Have I Known You Before?" album...I believe it was Al DiMiola's first tour with RTF, still a teenager?

Talk about a HOT show!

Hi and thanks for all your replies - this Message Board is
awesome. It's like a never ending concert!

First of all, I apologize on behalf of Italians here...
I'm real sorry your van was broken into and stuff.
That doesn't normally happen though, Italy is pretty safe - except - maybe yeah in the Autogrill parking areas. What a long drive though - from Venice to Rome! I was sure they'd put you on a plane.
Summer isn't the best season to be on the Autostrada. Way too much traffic and italians are bad drivers (but that's starting to change thanks to some new driving laws that are being enforced).

Also, I apologize because I took pictures, but this time I was there to see Hilary and got carried away ....
Robben's head is actually chopped off most of the pictures. That's no
excuse, I know. I promise I'll behave from now on.

Hilary!! Ciao Bella!! I just came home from a short 3 day break and
will post our pic tomorrow morning - here:
http://www.ictp.trieste.it/Italy2004/hilsuz.html
Let me say that you don't make goofy faces when you drum - on the contrary - by watching you play live, I've learned that you really give it all you've got and are 100 percent concentrated. Absolutely amazing!

Kiss the soil over there for me too! It's been ten years since
I've been able to do so...
(I was just thinking today - as I was driving along the Autostrada...
exactly a week and a day after the concert... I bet the band is glad
to be back home!)

I'm stuck here - but thank God there's music!

Ciao!

Suzie
