Hello Tonemaster,

The Weber 1265 Ceramics are a great choice.
I put a pair of them in a Kendrick 4212(59 Tweed Twin clone) 3 months ago.I chose the Ceramics over the Alnico version after talking with Ted Weber, who described the Alnico's as being "Smokey and Warm".He said the Ceramic"s were a little brighter, but warm, clear and round.A great clean sound, with a smooth break-up when you pour the volume to them.
Every guitar I play through this set-up sounds AWESOME!!!
I may try an Alnico in my Tweed Deluxe,it should sound killer.
All the best,
Dave

I've got a Two Rock Opal, it was Joe Mloganoski's "test" model, and it just sings through a couple 12" A Brown Soun Hemp Tone Tubby's. I was in a band with Terry Haggerty when John Harrison first got the hemp models and had us try them out - they are full range, not too bright like a JBL and they don't bottom out... and they hold up... According to their web site (www.tonetubby.com), both Clapton and Santana are using them now, along with long-time users Steve Kimock and Mark Karan...

Personally, I've always had a great affinity for the EV 12L. Another option is the Fuchs FAT-1.

Jeff, I just built a cab with two EVM 12L's and it is amazing sounding. Probably not for everyones taste, but very versatile. You have to wonder why Electrovoice quit building the 12L's. The downside, they make for a very heavy cabinet.

Didn't know Fuchs made speakers - I tried their 100 watt head and cab at the NAMM show last year - it was awesome....

The speaker is made by Eminence off their DeltaPro cast frame platform and voiced to Fuchs' specs. Its slightly more open and a shade less dry than an EVM. Kind of inbetween an EVM and a SRO.
Haven't had a chance to play one in a club though. EV's can be deceiving. They sound bright at home, almost hi-fi, but there is a huge amount of inductance in the heavy cone and large motor structure that rolls off the highs the louder you go. Of course sometimes this can be an advantage in not hurting people in the early rows, and they do stay clean a lot longer than other speakers. I've found that they choke off low to moderate power amps (less than 50W) and sound dull to me on stage.

For a Robbenish tone, the V30's were the WORST speakers I ever tried. Johan, my Weber 1265's are nothing at all like V30's. Not even a little. V30's are the worst crap I ever heard with my rig. I have 2 well broken in samples and they suck. The Weber's have none of the harshness at all, and have a singing sweet top end that is completely different than V30's.

Check out these clips for speaker samples.

I tried the Tonkers and hated them. I have had Harry Joyce/George Scholz speakers for about a year now and they are the best definition speakers I have come across. Especially in a George Scholz 2-12 Cab. That coupled with a Bruno 100 (which pretty nails the Dumble sound). At Ultrasound I played through every amp there including a Dumble and came away with the Bruno. I actually found the Fuchs not as responsive as the Bruno and a bit lifeless, wasn't impressed with the Two Rock stuff either.

To amend my earlier post on this thread the Vintage 30's AREN'T bad speakers just finicky about the high end signal you send them. With a class A EL-84 design like the MAZ they might actually sound really good. Be warned that the mids are pretty scooped but the speakers have a striking presence about them that makes them stand out from the crowd. The bottom end will DEFINITELY NOT crap out.
I happen to like Celetion Classic Lead 80's alot because of their thick high end but in order to get them to "feel good" They need to be LOUD. What I have done to offset that nature is to mate them with other speakers to compensate. In a slightly modified Fender Dual Professional I run one 80 and one G12-65. In another 2x12 cab that I use with a Ruetz RJ-20 (class A EL-34's) I run one of the 80's and a Vintage 30. I hated the V30's in the unmodified Dual Pro but trimming back the highs and shifting the mids was the objective of the mod (sounds like a BF Twin now, not even close before). I should probably try the V30 again but it sounds great the way it is and I'm tired of "over thinking" such things and the screwdriver keeps getting stuck to the magnet. :-)

I have a Rivera 2x12 Knucklehead cab that I loaded with one Classic Lead 80, and one Vintage30. Wired in parallel for 4ohm. I think I get a pretty good sound out of it. Although, I havn't tried that many speakers. After reading scott and phil's comments about the V30, I'm wondering how much better my sound could be...

Any of you guys run two different speakers in one cab like I'm doing? Or is it preferred to run two of the same? I'm really curious about these Webers now.

(I need to get a sound card in this computer so I can listen to everyones samples! *hmph*)

Don't argue with success!

I found the same combination to be very satisfying in my 2-12" VHT cabinet.
