Angela Strehli, Linda Tillery, and Tracy Nelson were (in my opinion) the absolute highlight of the day. These women have soul, energy, and sing from their hearts. I have listened to them since the 60s, and I swear, they sound better than ever. My only complaint is that they never let these talented women close out a show...in my mind, a mistake in judgement. They are a delight to see and hear, and I think it is high time we infuse some more estrogen into the heavyweight parts.
Magic Slim was fabulous (still has that "dirty old man" twinkle in his eye, blowin' kisses) and I cannot remember the name of the Texas harp player/singer who blew us all away, but HOLY SHIIIIIIIT, he was fabulous. Steve Miller was, as usual, great. Roy Rogers and Norton Buffalo always feel like old friends. Taj Mahal seems to have a new found fountain of pizazz...he was a fantastic closing act My new lesson: there is no such thing as enough sunscreen, so I am doubling yesterday's slathering. I fried the areas I neglected to cover...aw hell, who cares?
On the way home from a perfect San Francisco day in the meadow, I listened to "Keep On Running." I gravitate toward "Homework" and "Over my Head" (for obvious reasons,) but Cannonball Shuffle is drop-dead, absolutely fanfuckingtastic. The whole CD is wonderful...fat, lush guitar, with a slightly harder edge (!,) creamy vocals, accented with Mavis Staples' amazingly distinctive monogram. I have always found the Saxophone to be a major aphrodisiac, but the sax solos on this one are OFF THE FLIPPIN' CHARTS!
By the way Daved, I agree with your assessment. I, too, have always been a fan of Spencer Davis...but Robben's version of "Keep On Running" breathes new life into an already classic tune. "Badge" has always been a favorite of mine...but I am really loving Robben's new spin on it. This entire album has a big smile all over its face...and there is one on mine, as well. I know I am biased (moi?) but I hear so much joy radiating from this recording. Hey, a couple of the tunes make me blush!
Today is the BLOWOUT...I am so excited. I'll try to give a report ASAP. If you go to my web page, I have already loaded "Homework" on my home page...it is so damn tasty. (And you know, I am pretty good at helping with homework...)
My photos are mediocre, as I was, "Blinded by the light," but I will be far more diligent about shading my camera (and me) today.
Love to you all, (especially those of you who send me those great PMs! Thank you!)WOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I just walked in the door...can't wait to see my photos...I think I got some great ones. Okay, here is the skinny: All three Ford brothers...yes, Mark and Andy Just were blowing us away on harp. Nick Gravenities sang a few, Al Kooper AND John Burr on keyboards...SHIT, YOU SHOULD HAVE HEARD "GREEN ONIONS!!!!!" Damn. Robben looked rested and played the f#%$in' ass off of the black Baker; don't ask me what he was wearing...you know I never notice those things. I didn't even notice his shoes. I did take note of the almost continual smile on his face. His voice was strong and clear, and he seemed to be having a great time. We certainly did. Dewayne and Volker were great, as expected, and Chris Cain was absolutely on FIRE! Patrick cooked, as usual, and I swear, they do these Bloomfield tunes better every time I hear them, but shit, with Al Kooper and Nick Gravenites???? UNBELIEVABLE! My face hurts from smiling, (okay, from the sunburn, too) and my hands are sore from clapping. Did I forget to mention Joe Louis Walker? So many fine guitarists on the stage, my head was spinning. Triple keyboards, dual harmonicas, quadruple (more maybe?) guitars, and the same great horn section I have seen the last few times. Truly lush, decadent sound...what a way to spend a gorgeous Sunday afternoon! Wow. Did I mention that the weather was PERFECT?
I have listened to "Keep On Running" about ten times now, and I love it more each time I hear it. "Over My Head" has truly gotten under my skin, and I am convinced that "Homework" is for Robben's favorite teacher!
More tomorrow...I am exhausted, but filled with sensations I want to savor for days to come. Delicious. Carla Thomas did "Gee Whiz" and "Baby" and we were time warped back to high school and sneaking kisses behind the music building. She also did a killer version of "My Song For You," one of my all time, favorite tunes. She massaged every tiny ripple out of it, and it was over way too soon. Her voice is as great as ever. The entire "Stax" review was outstanding. Roomful of Blues rocked. Do I really have to wait another year for the next one?
