Hi All -

I made the trip from Md to Asbury Park to catch Robben at the Paramount Theater this past Sunday.

It was a beautiful day at the shore, and there were 2 festivals going on at Asbury Park, the Guitarbeque, and another local festival just a few blocks away (which also featured some rockin' music. Cool

I got there in time to see JohnnyA in a free outdoor show. I gotta echo JohnnyZ's comments...JohnnyA is A-MAZING !!! Very Happy

He's everything everyone has said, and more...I'll definitely be digging deeper into his music.

Robben and the group were in fine form, with Roscoe Beck playing bass. The first time I saw Robben I wasn't familiar with his songs...but 6 CDs later I'm getting the hang of it. Songs that I recognized:

Indianola
Help the Poor (rhumba-style)
Keep on Runnin'
Moonchild Blues(?)
Badge
Chevrolet
Start It Up (the encore)

Of course, there was much more.

I'm very impressed with Robben's chord work and rhythm playing (and it's kinda curious the way he turns his back and walks behind the amp...guess he's deep in thought, eh?)

Bob, Roscoe and Hilary all played great, and had extended solos during various tunes.

And they sold Heineken at the Paramount!!! Very Happy

The Paramount Theater/Convention Center, and the Asbury Park boardwalk, in general, have obviously seen better days...the theater had netting on the ceiling, presumably to prevent patrons from being hit by falling plaster. Shocked

Since I forgot my hardhat, I sat in the first row beneath the balcony!

It was a great show, and an "interesting" day in Asbury Park.

Cool "Help the Poor" rhumba style? Musta' been a knockout! In the meantime, maybe if the Paramount can raise some repair money they can loan all of that safety netting to Wrigley Field before someone gets hurt.

Hallo, Andy,

What you said was : THEY SOLD HEINEKEN !!!!

That's enough to have a realy realy bad show !
HEINEKEN, the most terrible beer in the world !

A question for Robben :
If they sell HEINEKEN at a place where you have to do a show,
just don't play and go somewhere else !
Robben, don't say that you like HEINEKEN ????
There's no better beer then BELGIUM beer, ain't it, DAVED ?

greetings from Brussels,

Fill

Well, you should taste some of the other stuff they were selling, it makes Heineken seem like nectar of the gods! Mad

I guess I could have smuggled in some good Kentucky bourbon... Cool

Dang, Filmore, you've made me thirsty!!! Laughing

My 20 Cents of Euro :

Better a wet Heineken than a Cold Miller (bleeeech) or a Bud ( Baaaaaarkkkkk), Rolling Rock is a little smart , but the best are micro brewery in northCal(sierra nevada ????) & Washington, never been to Oregon, all these micro breweries praise an heavy respect for BELGIAN beers , the best one in the world in my humble opinion. You all do know i'am not that britain inclined even if it is my name.
Belgian chocolate not bad either. Wink

Interesting description, Andy.
When Robben, Dewayne & Hilary came up with this version of HTP, I asked Robben what style one would term the rhythms of the song... Bossa Nova, Samba, etc.?
He laughed 'cause he said he really didn't know for sure. So we asked Hil & Dewayne. They discussed it and said it was closest to a Cha-Cha.
I've noticed that Roscoes interpretation of the bass line does indeed change the feel & character of the rhythyms and I've been meaning to ask Hilary if she would still call it a Cha-Cha.
Maybe, as you suggest, a Rhumba is now more the case?

Great show, btw...

Since I'm no drummer/percussionist, I'd have to defer to Hilary on this.

Whether it's cha-cha, rhumba, salsa, etc, might just be semantics, but the current iteration of HTP as played last Sunday definitely employs a clave rhythm, that much I DO know! Smile

These are 3-2 claves, i.e., 3 beats in measure 1, 2 beats in measure 2...a 2-3 clave is call a reverse clave.

I think maybe the cha-cha/rhumba/salsa labels are more representative of the dance style, rather than the rhythm per se, and some of these dance styles employ a 6/8 or 12/8 meter with a very specific step pattern.

And all of this Afro-Cuban rhythm/clave stuff can get pretty intricate.

But I just like to say, "r-r-r-r-OOM-ba!" (emphasis on rolling Rs) Very Happy

I also like Robben's intro/outro octaves vamp on this tune.

We need a recording of this to dissect!

I'm a new guy here and had to chime in. Guitarbeque was my first live RF show, and I'm still floored by Robben and the whole band.

As mentionedm the Paramount has seen better days, and in fact I almost left due to the smell...I had a newish girlfriend in tow, but she was game so we stayed.

What a great experience. As a guitar geek, I immediately had to go home and practice...not a single cliche, nothing but inventive stuff played extremely well with what had to be a very unforgiving amp tone.

The bonus that day was when I went in to the actual guitar show in the hall. Steve Adelson was demonstrating the Stick, and the half hour I got to hear him was worth the price of admission. All in all, it was a great day for a guitar fan, but a somewhat disconcerting one for a guy who likes to consider himself a guitar player...
