I picked this up years ago playing country (and western), and it even has a name in that genre (Nashville system or something like that). Just a quick intuitive way to transpose on the fly - if you know the chord sequence in one key, it is easy to visual it in another if you have to change keys. Like when the singer decides he can't hit the high notes after twelve beers, or a guest singer shows up. For years I don't think I had a chart with chords on it, just numbers. What is funny now is that I am so used to thinking this way on stage when someone calls out a chord change it throws me, but I know my numbers!
Plus, if you want to insult the blues purists just tell them you don't dig that old time 1-4-5 shit.
The numbers system is important in music. The relationships in music are relative. Rather than learn those relationships 12x, you can learn them 1x then apply them to all 12 keys.

F, Bb, C
Bb, Eb, F
Eb, Ab, Bb
Ab, Db, Eb
Db, Gb, Ab
Gb, Cb, Db
B, E, F#
E, A, B
A, D, E
D, G, A
G, C, D

Andy! These are great. It would've brung back memories if I didn't have so damn many of those diminished fifths back in the bed of my half tone. Some of the other comments on the thread are pretty funny, too. Thanks for making me smile on what has unfortunately turned out to be a suck-ass Friday.
