No posts since July 30? C'mon. Someone out there has to have SOMETHING new to announce. No weddings? No new babies? No new guitars? In the past 40 days no one on this BBS has had to snake out their shower drain?
Of course, I'll have to admit that I'm no help at all. The only thing new around here in the musical department is a pair of claves. Hey. If you're going to do a cover of the Dramatics' Stax hit "Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get," ya gotta' have a set of claves. Except that I discovered that these suckers are expensive. (Solid rosewood. I guess anything else sounds like clicking a pair of stainless steel forks into each other.) Maybe that's one of the reason's Stax went bankrupt?
"But baby, I'm for real ... I'm as real, as real can get ..."
OK, it wouldn't have been the same without the claves. But I'm NOT springing for a piccolo. You can only go so far with covers. _________________ - BlueRunner |

I have clients waiting for assignments to get done, a family to feed, and a strong desire to get home for dinner at least one night every three weeks.
So please stop posting links to all of the really neat other discussion boards you're involved in. (Wow.) _________________ - BlueRunner |

It's kind of early to talk about this, but Robben will be here next month. The lineup will be Dewayne on bass, Hilary on drums and Bob Malach on sax. This is going to be an especially exciting show for me as I am a huge fan of Bob Malach, and will be seeing him live for the first time. I love his playing and think that his style fits very seamlessly with Robben's. And the two of them together seem to push each other up another rung on the musical evolutionary ladder. Needless to say, I am also looking forward to seeing Hilary and Dewayne for the first time too. I guess you can tell I am excited about seeing this show.
And above and beyond all of that, it is always a pleasure for me to meet up with Daved and spend some time talking with him. A very kind and generous soul who makes every Robben Ford show an even more enjoyable experience. Many thanks Daved!

Yeah, let's talk about how great Daved is! (We can always sleep later!) I swear, he never stops working, even for a second, at one of Robben's gigs. The most I can ever get from him is a nod and a smile, but it is always apparent that he is moving at warp speed to make everything work. (Even gets the sun out of Hilary's eyes!) What a super guy!
We all appreciate you, Daved!
(See all of you on the 25th in Santa Cruz...should be a blast time!)
love,

Robben playing at the Steve Miller Concert here in Detroit Was NEW!
I got there late, cuz of school.
I missed the first song, but Robben and the band sounded wonderful!
As always.
I also had to leave early, so missed Steve Miller entirely though.......sob
My only disappointment was that many of the people waiting to see Steve Miller were out by the beer tents, and missed Robben. People were coming in for their seats, and milling about talking.
Robben's playing deserves rapt attention!!!!!!
Those who WERE listening heard a great set, but WAY TOO SHORT!!!!!
MORE, MORE, MORE!!!! |

Thanx, Elizabeth. You are much too kind.
Bill, hate to break your heart but it looks like Bob won't be coming to Japan with us... previous engagement.
We'll be using John R. Burr on keyboards for those dates. (BTW, trivia note for those who don't know... JR is Robben's nephew-in-law, being married to Patrick's daughter.) However, Dewayne and Hilary WILL both be there.
The Steve Miller gig was a mixed affair. There weren't all that many in the audience while Robben played and those that were didn't really seem to pay much attention (talking, reading, wandering around). They seemed to be there almost exclusively to hear the Miller hits, as they seemed to sit quietly bored during the middle of Steve's set wherein he played half a dozen blues tunes with Robben sitting in.
As for Steve, well, we were there at his special request for Robben to be his opening act. He made a special effort to get to the venue in time for Robben's set and then sat over in his tech's guitar station for the ENTIRE set, quietly jamming along the entire time with an acoustic guitar and everyonce in awhile letting out with a loud "YES!!" and a whoop when Robben ripped out something Steve especially liked.
He sent his tech over to me at one point to tell me that Robben could do any and all encores that he may wish. However, the crowd seemed so unenthused by the end of Robben's set that Robben chose not to return to the stage.
Steve is obviously a megafan of Robben's and was very glad to see us there! _________________ B C-ing U!

Too bad Bob Malach won't be here. He was the sax player on the Talk To Your Daughter tour wasn't he? I vaguely remember seeing him on some TV footage of Robben at Montreux just after Talk To Your Daughter came out. I've actually seen him a couple of times with Mike Stern and he really impressed.
I'm (slightly) disappointed that it's not going to be a trio gig, ala the Blue Line, because I think Robben's rhythm chops shine even brighter in that context. Like Bill, I'm really looking forward to these shows. I hope this will become a trend, Robben playing here twice a year. |

Personally, I'd love to hear Robben live with a great keyboard player, and not so coincidently I'm a keyboardist myself (though hardly a great one.)
Would love to hear "Revalation" with it's great gospel groove.
And I think "Life Song" would be an absolute knockout in concert...but on the recorded version, Ferrante's Fender Rhodes tremelo-ing between the stereo speakers helps define the essence of this song. I find this song to be one of Robben's finest recorded moments.
Has he played these tunes in concert recently?

I went to the Steve Miller thing exclusively to see Robben. It was great (as always) to see him play. He and the band souded great as usual. However, I felt really bad that the crowd was really light for his opening set. Most of the people did not know who Robben was. The thing was not promoted at all. I kept calling the venue to confirm that Robben was coming and they didn't know. There was no publicity about it in the local entertainment press. Robben's own web site didn't even list it as a tour stop. The only way I knew was when Daved responed to my post and said they were planning on coming. Also, I went to the Ojai clinic a few days before and spoke to Robben about his upcoming visit.
When Robben came to Detroit in February to the Magic Bag, the show was sold out in excess of capacity (40 to 50 people turned away). Also, I sponsored a clinic with Robben the day before the February show and we had an excellent turn out. In the past Robben has always had great attendace at his club shows.
Next time Robben comes to Detroit, he needs to come to a bigger venue (bigger than the Magic Bag) and there needs to be an appropriate amount of publicity. I plan to work with Dal Booth to help make this happen so that the next show in Detroit is a grand slam!! |

I found this rather apt quote thother day ...
"Give me the best instruments in Europe, but listeners who understand nothing or do not wish to understand and who do not feel with me in what I am playing, and all my pleasure is spoilt."
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-91) _________________ "Creativeness often consists of merely turning up what is already there. Did you know that right and left shoes were only thought up a little more than a century ago?" - Bernice Fitz-Gibbon 1894-1982 |
