Having not been there at the time I can't say for sure, but it may be very possible as I know Robben considers Bob to be one of the longest & closest of his industry friends and has told me that they go back many, many years to some of the earliest days of his career.
I hope he'll be back soon.
Personally, I think this configuration of the band has been one of my favorites. I find that "power trios" are briefly cool, but I tire of them all too quickly. Just not enough 'sonic color' to sustain the interest & excitement of my personal tastes, I'd guess.
And keyboards are almost always a plus in my book (Hey, I played them for many a year). But, even though it is one of the beautiful things about the instrument, even ONE keyboard is virtually an entire band unto itself allowing a single player the ability to produce and perform bass, rhythms, melodies, harmonies, and leads simultaneously.... and this is all spectacular and I love all the 'color' and, hey, I tend to overproduce and excessively layer my own at-home projects, so I have NOTHING against the use of keys.
But....! I have found over the last year and a half of listening to repeated performances that the rhythm/guitar/sax combination, all basically being (in relation to the keyboards anyway) "one voice" instruments, has created a unique musical challenge of shared space and inspiration between the musicians.
I have found this to be very refreshing and enjoyable.
In Robben's case, it seems to allow him to 'feature' more without having to solo as heavily to be 'spotlighted'. His musical interplay with Bob's sax is much more shared, supportive, and intimate than when I see him perform in tandem with ANY other instrument, even guitars.
This allows and encourages him to play more styles, approaches, and arrangements both in rhythm and lead. And, it seems to be more clearly apparent when he does.
To me, it's more the feel of a "duet" than it is even with additional guitars. _________________ B C-ing U!

When I first saw Robben with Malach I was a bit disapointed because I expected a keyboarder as he had so many excellent guys in the past like the one whose name I forgot from the Supernatural Tour in 1999 (Hilary on drums - I remember it welllll) but then I also had the impression that Mr. Ford gets lots of inspiration from interacting with Malach and then I really liked it though part of the audience obviously had problems accepting a sax. Can it be Malach has brought his playing down to earth a bit when playing with Mr. Ford since 2002? Seems to me though I love his playing but it serves this music well.

I'll definitely agree with Daved - keyboards are great addition to the almost any band.
I've seen Blue Line in Jazz Cafe (London ) 2002 with the B-3 player, sorry I don't remember his name, but he was fantastic and suited the band perfectly.
On the other hand what about guitar synth or VG (8-8 system? which also can be very colorful addition. Did Robben ever tried them? |

Carl Burnett kind of did this for some shows. From my perspective it wasn't as sucsessful as the pedal board/synth thing lacks expressivness and doen't fit as well in the dynamic thread of Robben's music. Usually the keyboardists play Robbens Korg/Hammond thing and/or an electric piano, which are more organic than pure synths. Although Otmaro Ruiz showed what a really talented person can do with synths at the Jing Chi shows. _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

I really enjoyed both configurations of the band. In 2003 we saw Robben with John Burr on keys and enjoyed the B3 sound with the band immensely. In 2004 with Bob on sax it was equally great but with quite a different dynamic. As I stated in an earlier review of a show, I enjoyed Robben's background support during Bob's solos almost as much as I enjoyed Robben's solos. Both ways were great. I will go see Robben the next time he comes my way andenjoy what new and wonderful sounds he gives to us. |

Hallo everyone,

BLOB is like a real france- dude : smoking weed and sleeping : those two
elements have surtain things in common, isn't it ?
About sleeping : I have been on vacation for two weeks to CROATIA, Dubrovnik. It was great ! I have slept here more then I have ever could in Belgium. Every year we go one week in spring and one week or twoo weeks in the fall. Why CROATIA : becaus my wife was born there.
I wonder : why does Robben not comming to such a nice place like CROATIA : it's riviera paradise ! It's near Italy ! I can manage a few adresses for Robben to play over there.
Furhter, I have nothing more to tell.
Greetings from Brussels,
Fill. _________________ Filmore |

Actually, Fil, Robben DID play in Croatia in July of 2001 and you're right, it WAS very beautiful. I believe the town was Citinova (spelling?), on a stage under the bell tower in the town square with the sea as a backdrop.
Our trip there was very enjoyable and very memorable for me. _________________ B C-ing U!
