I was wondering what pickups Robben has in his Les Paul. _________________ www.mrseamusic.com |

Yes, but Daved recently mentioned that Robben had tried some Burstbuckers and was interested in trying them out. Any more word on that Daved?

I was interested in what Robben used because I recently bought an LP copy and was going to change the pickups. I was just curious as to what pickups Robben had in his LP.
Someone recommended Carvin H22's (Allan Holdsworth pickups).
I may go with them, but I would like to keep the nickel covers.
Anyone have a suggestion on good humbuckers? In one of my other guitars I have a SD '59 in the neck and JB in the bridge, but I don't want a repeat.
I want a PAF tone. _________________ www.mrseamusic.com |

I checked out the Seth Lover's, and it says they are not waxed potted on the bottom.
I record on my computer. Wouldn't the fact that it's not waxed potted allow it to have some sort of buzz or hum when near computers?
Pardon my ignorance. I'm not very knowledgable about such things, but that's what my guitar tech told me a few years ago. _________________ www.mrseamusic.com |

The wax potting is to help prevent feedback squeel in high volume/high gain settings. Humbuckers will help to avoid buzzing and humming around computer monitors, but may not always be able to overcome the trash thrown out by these devices.
I recall Robben saying that the pickups in his newest Les Paul were Classic 57's, that Daved had set up with a push/push coil splitting circuit. This was last May, so I don't know if he's changed from those. _________________ Ham Fisted Bloozer |

If you're going to play with new pickups, one thing you might want to consider is the Duncan Pearly Gates. Robben has that in the neck of the black Baker. At one clinic I went to, he play another guys Baker with a 59 in the neck and then went back to his. The PG sounded much more open and richer. Some of that might be the different woods (alder/maple vs mahogany/spruce) but he was really high on the PG's. _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

Thanks. I've actually been thinking of trying the Pearly Gates - but also have been thinking about trying the Allan Holdsworth pickups from Carvin. I've read and heard some good things about the Carvin H22. But I don't know. I haven't made up my mind yet. So much to choose from.

Steve,
What pickup does he use in the bridge? _________________ www.mrseamusic.com |

I think he said that he moved the 59 to the bridge. Unlike amps and pedals, pickups seem to be one thing Robben likes to fool around with. Years ago during Tiger Walk time when he had the flame maple top solid Fender RF made he was raving about Lindy Fralin pickups. He always professes not to be a gear head, but probably knows more about the character of different pickups than anybody. I mean, you can buy them all, but if you had Robben's hands to wring out all they've got, you could really get the measure of them.
Maybe if we can ever get him on a chat here, that would be a good gear question to ask. _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

I have a pair of Seth Lovers and they're the best pickups I've ever tried. No problems with feedback unless you play death metal. They are extremely expressive and with beatifull overtones. True PAF sound which was lost in the 80s with the high output wax potted pickups.
I find robbens pickup combination quite strange and unusual and I put it down to the particular tonal characteristics of his Dumble (a lot of midrange and bass).
For the rest of us common mortals, Seths are just fanstastic. ;)

I don't know why choosing a pickup is so difficult this time. But I'm just finding so much to choose from, and I want to get the tone that I'm after.
What's been going through my head is, I need more guitars so I can experiment with more pickups.
