Alright, I gotta ask. Is there a difference between a harp and a harmonica? I've always thought of a harp as being that big triangle-shaped string instrument that Harpo Marx played. And, before I saw James Montgomery last month, someone commented about how he's mastered the harp, but I just couldn't imagine him sitting on stage plucking away on this big stringed thing (I would've freaked if he actually did!)... Very Happy

Someone, please set me straight here.

Thanks,
~JZ~

My understanding is that a "harp" is a harmonica and the string inst. you refered to. In the old days a harmonica was called a "Blues Harp" thus being shortened to "harp". So in a blues setting...harp and harmonica are one and the same. Just my 2 cents.

Am I imagining this or have I also heard it refered to as a mouth harp?

It's late. Anything is possible at this point.

And you guys only suspected I was nothing but wind. Laughing

Actually my other favorite pastime is sailing. At one time I was going to name my boat Aeolian Passage, meaning both a journey with the winds and a musical phrase. I decided against it as when you hail someone on the radio, you have to say the name of your vessel three times and that's too many sylables. Smile

I especially liked the French term for harmonica "ruins the lips". In my high school days I played some harp (John Fogarty did, Mark Farner, Joe Walsh, it was a requirement) and as it fell apart, I cut my lip or scratched it a few times.

Me too. That's originally what attracted me to the Bros. Arhoolie record in '75. Was also into J. Geils, Butterfield, Carey Bell, etc.

Oh yeah, and Jeff Beck, Tommy Bolin, Roy Buchanan, Robben.... Very Happy
