Cool I've previously offended everyone by discussing politics here. Then I really, really offended everyone with some religion. Then it was sex. But as this is the "Open Discussion," now I'm REALLY going to go out on a limb, especially with you NorCal folks:

So how about baseball? Will the Dodgers get that one victory this weekend, or will the Giants rise to the occassion and sweep them? How about the Angels coming into Oakland in a dead heat? Is it just another Fall of Tears and Disappointment for Red Sox fans? More Yankee pinstripes in October?

So who do you predict we'll see in the World Series?

Well, I have zero interest in sports, but I do find it interesting that Japan is exporting baseball players to the US now. And I saw that there is even a Japanese guy playing basketball in the US now. What will it be next, sumo wrestlers to play football?

There's a very popular Japanese baseball player who's been tearing up the US major leagues for several years now. Everyone who follows baseball even the slightest bit knows about the Seattle Mariners' Ichiro (Suzuki- I actually had to look it up the last name). Ichiro is on the verge of breaking one of baseball's longest standing hitting records- number of hits in a season. With 3 games left to play, he is 1 hit behind George Sisler's record of 257 hits in 1920. I also saw a couple of days ago that he's either broken or will probable break (I don't recall exactly) the record for most hits in 3 consecutive seasons. Ichiro also leads the majors in hitting average (.371) and his 256 hits to date is 50 more than the next best hitter. He's an incredible player!

Cool Ichiro not only did it, but afterwards he went over to the stands to shake hands with George Sisler's 81-year-old daughter. And for those who wonder about Sisler doing it in a 154-game season vs. the modern-day 162-game season, keep in mind that Sisler never had to play at night, and never had to face anything like today's bullpen specialists. Bottom line: Both were/are fantastic ballplayers, and Ichiro will eventually join him in the Hall of Fame.

As for the Dodgers yesterday -- WOW.

Cool Hey, how's Torquay United doing down there in Division Three? (My daughter's favorite, from the year she lived and went to school in Tiverton.) As for Arsenal, looks as if they're off to a great start.

Hi Blue,

They've changed things around with the start of the new season - there are now four divisions: The Premiership (Arsenal, etc), the Championship, League One and League Two. At the moment, Torquay United are second from bottom of League One Confused

What impressed me was how humble Ichiro was in setting this record. Quite a contrast to Ricky Henderson and some other ballplayers who break longstanding records. I have a 13 yr old lefthanded leadoff hitter in my house who tries to do everything like Ichiro. Back in my day everyone wanted to wear #7 and do a home run trot like Mickey. In this day and age I see a lot of youth ballplayers with Ichiro as a role model. Seems like a good choice to me.

As a die hard Red Sox fan living in NY state, things get a little weird this time of year. We are all hoping for Bosox/Yanks ALCS but the Twins and Angels could both present a stumbling block to that scenario. I'm glad the Dodgers got in. They are a young, hard working team and I will enjoy watching them play.

Cool At least until tomorrow night's game in St. Louis: Don't talk to me about the Dodgers, and for goodness sake don't tell my daughter how badly Torquay United is doing this season.

Re: the Dodgers

BlueRunner, even in defeat, you and the fans can be extremely proud of your Dodgers. I can't remember the last time I saw a display of team sportsmanship like at the end of that final game. Even the Cardinals' behaviour in accepting the Dodgers' sincere congrats and their low-key opponent's field celebration is noteworthy.

And, that Jose Lima- what a character! He would fit in and look great in a Red Sox uniform!
