Robben Ford Discussion

I started listening to some of Robben's older stuff again (Discovering the Blues), and in his early years, he used to growl at times. With his youthful voice, the growl really stands out, and in my opinion, it didn't complement his voice at all. I'm glad he doesn't use a growl anymore...

I like robbens singing it has a distinct character to it. now...if he didn't play guitar like he does i don't think he could carry a carreer w/ just his voice. my favorite RF disc that i think has a perfect blend of singing, guitar chops, song writing and production is "Supernatural". i think that CD was highly underated and overlooked and unfortunately released at the same time Santanas album of the same name came out. songs like "Nothing to nobody" and "Water for the wicked" (that one sends me to church) and his version of "Lovin cup" are my standout favs. the other tracks hold up very well and grow on you, lyrically it's a solid piece of work. I've always been a big fan of instrumental groups, albums and artists. I think my first exposure was billy cobhams "Spectrum" album. in the music biz it's a singers world. this of course is IMHO and in no way reflects the opinion or is endorsed by this discussion forum.

Robben told us at a clinic that Supernatural was his worst selling album and that disappointed him greatly. I believe he said he was most proud of that album for his songwriting. If I remember correctly, he said some people complained that there wasn't enough guitar on it but to him it was full of guitar work.

I happen to love the album and think that he should be very proud of it. From so many aspects it shows what an accomplished musician/songwriter he is and its a shame that it didn't sell well.

I was at a clinic with Robben a couple of years ago. I had brought my "Talk To Your Daughter" Cd for him to sign. The majority of people that brought a CD had that one. The kid in front of me had "Supernatural". Robben commented on that. I told him that I had bought both "Supernaturals". I gave Carlos's away and kept his. I still have Robben's and I still love it. It is definitely one of his best and the guitar work is wonderful.
