Hello everybody,
Robben mentioned that his sound and phrasing was inspired by the saxophone players.
I love sax but can’t play it so I decided to try a Parker MIDI FLY and Roland GR-33 guitar synth switched directly into the computer to imitate the tenor.
For clean and overdriven guitar I’ve used modified Crate Blue Voodoo 50 head into the 4x12 small Marshall cab loaded with the Celestion G12 Century neodymium speakers miced with Superlux PRA-238 dynamic microphone.
Guitar is Parker with Kinman AVN-63 in neck and Armstrong’s Motherbucker in the bridge position. No effects except reverb and no mastering compression on guitar after recording. Bass is Yamaha TRB-5 fretless and keys are Roland XV 3080.
Track starts with the GR-33, next is BV clean ch. and neck pickup.
Next is OD ch. With the AVN-63 and then the bridge pickup.
Coda with the clean ch. and the neck pickup again.
Enjoy the music and please tell me what do you think.

This is great stuff. To play a different patch like that, you really have to listen to what is coming out and hear other instrument. You have awesome control over the dynamics and get some really sax like expressions going.
The rest of the playing ain't nothing to sneeze at either. Although compared to the sax and clean guitar, the OD sounds much more compressed. Time for a Fuchs injection _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

Damn! That is nice!! Great job on playing that sax patch. I have tried doing that in the past but was always a dismal failure. You handled it extremely well, with very nice touch and phrasing. There are obviously some talented fingers at work there. I really liked the clean solo too. Great touch and taste there too. The overdrive part I liked less, but that's to say that I did like it, but I liked the other bits more. Very well done. This mp3 is going in my iPod. And that's a first for me!
OK, now I have to ask, I love that backing track. Is that something you did, or did you find it somewhere?

Since he listed the keys and bass, I have to presume he's a multi-linguist (and maybe a cunning one at that ) _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

You're right, I missed that. In that case, who wants to start begging for a copy of the backing track? (I'm not gonna touch that cunning linguist line!)

Stive and Bill,
Thanks very much for listening and comments, really appreciated.
Yes, I always was a guitar synth lover from 1979 when I’ve got ARP-AVATAR – huge, slow and complicated thing but who cares – it had MOOG sounds and noises.
Than I borrowed friends Roland GR 300 and it was fantastic in comparison – compact, fast and had that Pat Mateny “trumpet” sound. The 80’s was guit-synth era I think Zappa, Fripp, McLoughlin (synclavier), Holdsworth (synthaxe), and so on.
I tried affordable ones: Korg, Yamaha, Casio and Roland but never was satisfied until Roland introduced VG-8 and later VG-88. No delay or glitches. Also latest GR-33 and GR-20 not bad with adjustments one can achieve reasonable speed and response, so I guess I had loads of practice.
On the amp side I never had chance to try Dumble, Two Rock, and Fuchs (I’d love to). My best amp always were 1967 Marshall Plexi, than Boogie Mark IV and now Koch Multitone and Pedaltone. I’ve got Crate Blue Voodoo 50 head as a present and I modified it, made something between Plexi and Boogie but with four channels.
Now about the track – I wrote it for the singer but so far got no lyrics and decided to record as instrumental just for fun.
I will put the backing track soon on the net and everybody are welcome to use it for practice.
Thanks once again. |
