I practiced "the claw" method a little today and found it helpful in some areas. I'll just have to continue to work with it and see how it progresses.
Keep at it for a while. I think it will grow on you. What I like about it is that it keeps your fingers more together rather than splayed out like a rake, so it feels more like you're massaging the fretboard rather than poking at it. It's a much more comfortable feeling. It also keeps me moving around the neck instead of staying in one spot because I move to notes more instead of reaching for them. It means you need to be more comfortable all over the neck, but that too is something worth developing. And finally in my case, as I have a touch of arthritis in my hands, the spread-out fingers approach can actually be painful for me, whereas Robben's "claw" approach is much more relaxed and comfortable.

I have to admit it is more comfortable playing that way.
As far as arthritis is concerned, I too was diagnosed with arthritis a few years back. My dad had severe arthritis and wound up not being able to walk for the last couple of years of his life.
So I went to the internet and did some research on it. There was this guy who claimed to have such bad arthritis that he was beginning to bend over and not be able to open doors. And he was 35 years old.
So he found that he was allergic to some foods. By going on a special diet, he got rid of all of his arthritic symptoms.
So I found out that wheat affects me. If I eat too much wheat, my knees and fingers start to ache.
But when I don't eat wheat, the pain goes away after a couple of weeks or so.
So maybe go on a bland diet for about a month. Eat no wheat products (I eat spelt bread) and only vegetables that don't have allergens. Eat only fish. Then when the pain begins to go away, slowly, one by one, bring back your normal foods. And if the pain comes back, you know what foods you're allergic to. Dairy products are also bad.
I took my Les Paul to a luthier to have him do some work. And he called me and asked what pickups I had in it. I told him WCR pickups. The guy couldn't stop commenting about them, how good they sounded.
He was really impressed with them.
I should get the guitar back tomorrow (Friday). For now I only have a POD to record with. So I don't know how much of a true sound I can get out of them right now (until I get my amp back). But I'll still record something with the LP to let you hear it. _________________ www.mrseamusic.com

Thanks for the info on diet and arthritis. I hadn't considered that before. I have other health considerations that I have to control my diet for. At this rate, I'll end up with nothing but water and rice! And I'm not sure about the rice!!
I'll be hearing Robben's Burstbuckers on Saturday, and then I'll be comparing the Antiquities in my guitar to a friend's guitar with Burstbuckers on Sunday. I should have a better idea of what I want after that. I'm quite close to going with the Darkbursts, but I'm waiting to hear what you have to say after you get to spend a bit more time with them. I have a feeling it won't take much to push me over the edge.

My diet is very boring. But if it means living pain free, then I would rather live that way.
I think it's a small price to pay to be pain free.
Besides, how many hours a day do we eat compared to how many hours a day do we deal with pain? _________________ www.mrseamusic.com
