ROY BUCHANAN RADIO SPECIAL
I'm very fortunate to have a radio station in my community that supports the Blues and the music of great players like Roy Buchanan. Once a year, DJ Dennis Stone puts together a wonderful tribute to Roy Buchanan. The show will feature lots of live concert recordings, about 180-200 minutes of Roy at his best !!!!! This is a two-part show that can be listened to over the internet (if you have a high-speed internet connection and a media player).
The first two hours of the Roy Buchanan Tribute will broadcast Monday, August 16th from 9:30-11:00 PM Eastern Standard Time. The second half of the show will broadcast Friday, August 20th from 4:00-6:00 AM (AM!!!!). If you are a fan of Roy's music, I promise you will LOVE this show!
You can listen to WMNF Community Radio at
http://www.wmnf.org/programming/listen.shtml
I never got to see Roy Buchanan in concert, but I love his music and I enjoyed his biography, American Axe, by Phil Carson. Are there any other Roy fans out there _________________ Travelling by train of thought |

Thanks a Lot RoadW... , you true lover of blues music listen you all this radio program is top of the bill.
Hey Road do you think this program will be different from the Buchanan tribute you switched me on last year ?????
Can't wait for this .
Hey Roy R.I.P on guy .
You know last 16th June i spent one night in jail , and having an inner buchananish attitude made me aware of trying to get over this nightmare
without being hurt at all , but it was really humiliating as well crudely realizing why the karma threw me in France rather in AmeriKKKa, 'coz if i were born american i'll be dead or in jail siince a longtime and guess for what : for nuts;
Remember use an electrikkk guitar (in france) go to jail.
Play an aKKKordion , ride a porsche
So i will always remember this interview of Roy's wife telling how deseprate and dead broke she was and trying to tell people her husband might have been knocked badly by the police............... no comments.
Ride on brother Roy, ride on and let's sing If 6 was 9.
Thanks Roadie for sharing |

Roy Buchanan fans? But of course! In fact I just picked up a CD remaster of his first 2 LPs. Incredible stuff. He has always been a big influence on my playing, not necessarily his style of picking and rapdi fire tele-abuse, but more for his dynamics and taste. The Live in Japan LP is fantastic and I understand it, and another live CD are now available. Thanks for the heads up. |

If you like Telecasters (And I do indeed!!), you must like Roy. He and Albert Collins both have a killin' tone! _________________ "Don't play what's there, play what's not there" Miles Davis |

Monday's Roy Buchanan Tribute (Part I) included an interesting mix of good-quality live recordings:
Delta Blues (Evanston, 1977)
I'm Evil (Evanston, 1977)
Big Boss Man (Austin 9-1-78 )
Stone Blind Bluz (Austin 9-1-78 )
Hey Joe (Austin 9-1-78 )
3rd Stone Jam (Austin 9-1-78 )
Got a mind to give up Living (Livestock out take)
Barefootin' (Boston 5-18-74)
Get Out a My Life Woman (Denver 1974)
I never would've imagined Roy singing a HAPPY rock n' roll song like "Barefootin' " but it sounded great
My other favorites were the slow blues tunes, "Got a Mind to Give Up Living" and "Hey Joe".
I'm curious about the origin of Roy's song "I'm Evil." It has the same beginning lyrics as the Elvis song "Trouble" (by Leiber-Stoller). I think both recordings surfaced around 1974. I've read that Roy, in his mid-teens, loved listening to the early music of Elvis and Scotty Moore, but it seems strange that Roy wouldn't use the real name of the song, if he was using the lyrics It's not the same song, but does anyone have any idea why he used the lyrics ?
When I was looking for more info about "I'm Evil", I found something else interesting... In 1959, Roy Buchanan and Scotty Moore played on the same record, Dale Hawkins' "Ain't that Lovin' You Baby/My Dream [Checker 923]. I think it's very cool that Roy would get to play on a record with his "guitar hero" a mere 4 or 5 years into his own career as a musician. It shows what a gifted player he was from the start
The second part of the Roy Buchanan Tribute happens tomorrow morning (Friday, August 20th from 4:00-6:00 AM EST). It should be two more hours of great music . Is anyone else planning to listen ? _________________ Travelling by train of thought |

WOW, that was some of the best radio I've ever listened to
And YES, I heard Blob get plugged by the DJ, Dennis Stone
The show was great -- check out this playlist:
Help Me instrumental(1973, My Father's Place, NYC)
Bluz instrumental (1984, unknown)
Peter Gunn (1984, unknown)
Dog bluz (11-21-81 Keystone Theater)
Hey Joe (11-21-81 Keystone Theater)
Cadenza (out take, Street Straight)
Love Me Twice (1979, San Francisco)
Since you've been gone (1979 San Francisco)
Soul Died Friday (1979 San Francisco)
Petes Blue (1973, My Father's Place, NYC)
Suzie Q live (1973, My Father's Place, NYC)
Bluz Instrumental (6-24-84 McCabes)
Soul dressing (out take, 1977, Japan)
I loved Suzie Q -- Roy really could rock n' roll One of the instrumentals was a very cool Secret Agent Man-like jam . I think Soul Died Friday was lyrics over Key to the Highway. Just an awesome show !!!
Did anyone else listen _________________ Travelling by train of thought |

JohnnyZ, I started out with the Sweet Dreams compilation, which has a little of everything on it. I agree with Telefunk1 that Roy's live stuff is fantastic _________________ Travelling by train of thought |

Johnny, I was told by a guy I was studying with to get the the self titled Roy Buchanan album, Polydor 831 413-2. Bit of everything on here. Country, swing, outside half-whole scale stuff a la Bloomfield, and killer blues. The opening four bars of my slow blues clip were ripped directly from cut 4 of this album. But you have to hear the country intro he does going into this. Awesome. _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

A is right - get the first album, but don't stop there. The second is vital, too. Listen to Filthy Teddy and Tribute to Elmore. Great back up players on these two as well. Livestock is great if a little uneven (and I will reiterate my endoresment of the Live in Japan release - his live version of Sweet Dreams will make you cry).
His output can be divided into three eras, the Polydor years (which are collected in the Sweet Dreams anthology), the Atlantic releases (he gets kind of close to fusion on some of these ) and the final stuff of the Alligator years. I much prefer his earlier stuff, but take a listen to his Alligator cuts, too, there are some gems hidden in there.
Great stuff and an amazing player who kept it simple - tele and a small Fender amp cranked up. It was all in his hands and mind. There is a good reason he was one of Jeff Beck's favorite players. |

Hi everyone, new member and first time poster here. I'm a big RF fan and really dig RB to. Please check out my site www.strat2k.com .. I have a version of Roy's song "I'm a Ram" and a tribute tune I wrote called "Goodnite Roy B." There is also a version of "Talk To Your Daughter" based loosely around RF's version. Hope you enjoy and let me know what you think. -dave |

I volunteer my opinion here. I bought Dave's 2 cd's based on the clips in his website, and for $15, it's 2 cd's of very entertaining music. It's a sweet feeling to have taken a chance on a blind purchase and really liking it especially after having, more than once, spent more and totally hated it. Great job, Dave, on both the covers and your originals.
