Gear survey for anyone else out there who is as bored at work as I am today...
If you had a thousand bucks (give or take a hundred or so either way) to spend on a NEW amp (1-12 combo config only, please) - what would you buy? And since I am in the education bidness, explain why.
Inquiring minds want to know. |

Peavey Classic 30, and take my wife out to dinner with the change.
Why? Because one of the best live tones I ever got was with a borrowed C30, and I have wanted one ever since.

Reverend Kingsnake, and take the wife out to a really fancy dinner with the change, OR
Carvin Vintage 16, and take the wife out to dinner a whole bunch of times with all of that change.
Both amps are a little "different" (i.e., not your usual Peavy, Fender, Marshall, etc. stuff), so you'd have fun answering all of the questions folks asked about them, and both are reasonably priced for what you get. _________________ - BlueRunner |

Why? Killer cleans and just add an RC Booter and Fulltone FulldriveII for some crunch... Killer Strat setup! |
Uh, isn't the Princeton a 1 by 10 combo? Minor quibble. I'd agree. So many great recordings on this amp. If I were living on a boat or otherwise space constrained, this would do it.
I did have a Peavy C30 for awhile. Put a Mesa/Celestion 90 in it. A real giant killer. Eats output tubes like a pack of teenage boys, but sounds great all out of proportion to it's cost. Put the Hot Rod Deluxe in the under $500 catagory too. _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

I saw one yesterday for ¥47,800, and wondered if they were any good. |

Isn't that the new price? You should check one out if you get a chance. The overdrive is not so good, but the clean channel is really nice and you can push it to overdrive to get some really nice tone.

I think the red-knob twin that is in my local shop for $750,-. Great amp but the speakers suck. So the $250 is for new Celestion Classic Leads. Another advantage is it fits in the same case as my own Twin Reverb. _________________ "Don't play what's there, play what's not there" Miles Davis |

Pre CBS Princeton is a great amp, but not new - I am interested in the new stuff out there.
And, hey, don't worry about having change left - push the limits here and spend the whole thing. The Carvin and Peavey might be good amps for the bucks, but take it up a notch. What about stuff like Dr Z, or Rivera, they both have combos that are in the grand range? What can $1000 buy in the realm of great tone in a 1-12 package?
The Reverend is an interesting selection - don't hear much about them but they have always been intriguing. |

Okay then, an Allen Accomplice kit. Then I make up the difference with several nights alone with my soldering iron
What a Deluxe Reverb wants to be when it grows up. I almost bought one too, but found a SF to rebuild for half the price. _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

I've been researching combos in the $1K-$1.5K range, and, in my opinion, the DrZ amps are the best value in this price range. I recently ordered a DrZ MAZ-18 Junior 212 combo with 1 Celestion G12H30 and 1 Celestion Vintage 30. The 1x12 in the MAZ-18 Junior model is $1549, and the 2x12 is $1699. For another $150, why not an extra 12" speaker? There are a couple of other DrZ 1x12 combo models under $1.5K...

Yeah, After I electocute myself, I'll let you know how it sounds. $550 for the donor, and another hundred from Antique Radio in orange drops and film resistors. And oh yeah, a BF panel and logo _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

My vote - for considerably less than $1K - new (buy used) version of the Fender Pro Reverb. Requires tube fu to bring into great form. Fender-y dude!

No.1. Koch Multitone 1x12 combo:
Killer cleans and creamy overdrives, great noise reduction on drive channels. 2x12 is just fantastic but expencive. Transparent, loud.
No.2. Laney TT-50 1x12 combo. 4 channels, independent equaliser and reverbs on clean and drive channels, boost on both channels, solo on both channels, MIDI operated as well as footswitches, great clean and sweet drive.
No.3. VHT-45 “Blues” 10+12 combo !!! class A. Just killer amp.
No.4. Peavey Delta Blues 1x15, great drive and nice tremolo
IMHO !!!! |
