There are still five spots open for Robben's November 13th guitar clinic in Ojai, CA., which is limited to 25 students. Musicians have traveled from the east coast, even Europe and Japan, for a chance to study with Robben in this all-day intensive master class. Details, testimonies from students, and registration information can be found on Robben's clinic page. Hope to see you there!

As an attendee of the August clinic, I strongly recommend Robben's clinic to any and all players. No matter your level, you will get something out of it (and it's big fun too). I traveled from Michigan just for the clinic and it was well worth it.

If you have any specific questions or need any additional information, let me know.

Cool Yeah. Don't let Anne scare you with the "Master Class" stuff. This is a great opportunity for anyone who loves the blues, loves guitar, or just loves having a fun day and learning a lot of new and interesting stuff. And Robben and Anne will make you feel welcome no matter who you are or what your musical experience is.

I've done two of these and they are great fun! Robben is a pleasure and answers every question asked. He is great at breaking things down to simple concepts. I wish he would offer a week long class, but that's probably not possible with his schedule.

What are the possibilities of having a clinic outside of Ca.? A lot of people would love to attend-- except for the logistics (re: expense) There are MANY
people that just can't swing the air fare/driving thingy to participate in one of these (I'm confident) enlightening clinics. How about a clinic/seminar TOUR? Might sound crazy- but, hey-- musicians/guitar players are all over the place- not just Ca. A person of RF's caliber obviously wants to do this clinic thing--why not give us all a shot? Please?

Every now and then, Robben is invited to do a clinic (in other locations than Ojai, CA.) produced or sponsored by a guitar shop or music store. He will often accept these offers if his schedule permits. We are producing the clinics in Ojai ourselves, scheduled regularly ( approx. every three months) to allow Robben to teach when he is off the road and resting at home. Since we produce the Ojai clinics ourselves, we can assure the students of "quality control", i.e. the classes are limited to 25 students, the length of the clinic allows for in-depth teaching and discussion, and we know that Ojai is a pleasant place to visit. It is also a good way for Robben to work without having to travel, which is really welcome considering all of the airports he frequents! Robben will certainly be teaching other clinics in other locations from time to time, but beyond the clinics that we produce ourselves, we can't really tell you when or where these will be. As I said before, many students have found it worth the trip to come to the Ojai clinics, and since there is one scheduled every three months, there is an opportunity to plan to attend in advance and to tell friends about it if the experience was worthwhile.
Thanks for your interest!

I realize that the topic is still the Nov. 13th clinic, but has a date been set yet for the next clinic, presumably some time in February?

And, what sort of weather can a 'in-the-middle-of-winter' Northeasterner expect in Ojay in Feb.? Smile

Thanks,
~JZ~

There ya go... straight from the wife-of-the-horses-mouth, explained much better than I could have.
I, personally, do like the idea of a "Clinic Tour", but I am not an in-the-know manager, promoter, or arteest, so I can only imagine that setting up the logistics could be potentially a bit complicated.
But perhaps an enterprising, adventurous, entrepeneur-type would be able to work out the kinks to everyone's satisfaction and start a whole new aspect of the business.

Cool Johnny Z: No guarantees about the 13th, but this past weekend it was in the high 70's and partly cloudy in the day, down to the high 40's with clear skies and sparkly stars at night, and with the hillsides greening up a bit after a surprise fall rain a week ago. Just another weekend in Paradise up in Ojai. And no, Robben and Anne do not pay me to say these things. They're simply true. There are reasons that Frank Capra used Ojai for the outdoor shots in his production of "Lost Horizon."

the nov. 13th clinic was awesome! my first time. at first i felt as though maybe i was in over my head. my fears were soon erased as the class started. i think there were about 5 returnees, about 22 or so in all. & one guy from argentina. it was interesting to hear robbens' views regarding the music business, touring with greg allman, "zen guitar", & just PLAYING! what a gracious guy. such a world class talent, & being able to study with him made for a great day. he brought 2 blackface deluxe reverbs with him, one had been modded by mr. dumble. the dumble mod had a nice boosted quality about it. i kept thinking " i wish my dr sounded like that. he did a little demo with the zen overdrive pedal also. oh, & he likes it. i bought 2 of his books & got inspired to PLAY again. i forgot just how much i love the guitar. weather was perfect. i made the drive in 2 & 1/2 hours form escondido, but it took about 5 hours to get home, l.a. traffic ya know! ojai is a beautiful little town outside of ventura. i would definately reccomend this class. if you are thinking about attending do so soon, life's too short. tony Very Happy

The Nov. 13 guitar clinic went on smoothly with a pleasant weather at Ojai. There was clear blue sky and no rain all day in a nice neighborhood situated on a valley. The clinic started with the usual introduction of each attendee, and the guy to beat was Pablo, who came all the way from Argentina to attend the clinic, the farthest so to say, and he got a chance to play with Robben as well. Several handouts were given including that keyboard representation of up to two octave, shuffle blues charts and handwritten tabs of about five pages showing chords, substitutions and scales. The chords and measure to Moonchild Blues was also handwritten by Robben on one of the sheets. Robben brought two Fender Deluxe Reverb amps this time, and one of the amps has been modded by Mr. Dumble and this one has a fat, sweet tone, for lack of words to explain it, so magical, that it is still ringing inside my head as of this writing. The speaker of which is Celestion 65. Yes, he plugged in his favorite Les Paul with Burstbucker pick-ups which he said he is experimenting with. He pulled out a little pedal that he is using which seems to enhance more edge and spice to the tone, it's a Zendrive. The other amp paled in comparison to this modified amp. He also recommended for reading a book titled Zen Guitar by Zudo and had read several passages to us. The magic words were "hear what you play"and"fingerpainting". He showed us his handpicking style which he favored due to more contact and closeness to the guitar. Tonal subtlelities, emotion and dynamics as form of expression or talking to the listener, wow. The notes are the colors, chords are the shades and silence is the canvas. Robben presented to us the music of Laura Nyro, recorded sometime in 1968 which he played on the CD player, you could see the expression on his face with eyes closed and head slightly bowed, feeling the music inside. He said, "She's the Queen" after the song ended, which has no guitar part, only piano and vocals with a little bit of cowbells and xylophone. Shades of Laura Nyro can be heard on music of Joni Mitchell and Rickie Jones after listening to her. Robben talked about the plight of music scene today. Blues and Jazz, the birthplace of which is in U.S. is not really visible on today's music scene. That's why we see our favorite artists gigging more in Europe or Japan than here. He also mentioned that he will tour with Gregg Allman with Neil Larsen as musical director. He will be the lone guitarist for the East coast tour, sorry folks, no Dickey Betts. This report only covers a fragment of what I learnt in that clinic and hanging out with the man. Even with a two-week old broken wrist, my right hand in a cast, still that didn't deter me to attend the clinic because it's all worth it.
My two cents---Cheers. Very Happy
