Help me settle a discussion. What key is "Born Under A Bad Sign" performed in on "Talk To Your Daughter". I say D major. Two of my bandmates say D minor. It was originally written in C#! Thanks for your help.

Maybe this should go in the theory section. The riff is basically a D minor pentatonic. So in common blues style you could play either a D dominant or D minor chord under it. Funny that the Clapton opening licks are major/mixolydian over what is basically a minor song. I have friends who are theory hounds who would say that makes the key signature C major.

Whew! good thing it's a cool song. I just can't sing it in D and have to move it back down to G where more people play it.

One fun thing to do with this song, is in the riff, pre-bend the minor 3rd up to a major, so it falls in place as you play the riff. You can drag the bend and phrase late, a la Jeff, and it sounds really cool.

I have the Hal Leonard "Gig Guide". It shows the song in C# major with the I chord being C#7. My friends say Robben plays Dminor. I say the rhythm figure is a D7 chordal riff on the verses. It surely doesn't sound like a minor chord to me. Thanks,
Frank

...as Aeo said, the riff is minor pent or blues scale.

I played along with the song and played:

Dmi7 chord =====> Mad

D7 chord =====> Smile

D9 chord with the little
slide thingy with ring finger =====> Cool

Kids, try this at home...your mileage may vary.

Razz
