There's an article on www.bigroadblues.com that has a lot of interesting ideas related to this thread topic. One quote by writer/musician Brian Robertson that captures the essense of this discussion from a performer's point of view is:

"As a musician, half of the joy is to produce -- to make music, to create, to just flat ass pick and sing. The other half is to connect with someone out there, to have the tree fall in the forest and have somebody be there to say, 'I heard that -- I think it's in the key of G.'"

Robertson's article skims a broad surface -- how both radio and recordings were the beginning of the end for live music. He doesn't address the details of how to get the right kind of fans to your gigs, but he does point out the bigger problems facing the live music performance industry.

His writing is passionate... "You can play all the Son House you want on your computer, but what in the hell is that compared to sitting in a hot, sweaty little juke joint on a Saturday night and feeling the air go electric and dark and fully charged when Son House hits that first palm open slap-down of his strings, his eyes roll up in his head and off he goes?"
