|
|
I stumbled across this diary last week that is a must read for any musician and highly recommended for anyone else:
http://www.prosoundweb.com/recording/mm/week1/mm.php
(Warning: laced with lots of salty language, but absolutely hilarious)
Its a diary written by a top sound engineer in LA about a session he recorded with a disfunctional band that had been signed by the suits at a huge record company. If anything could go wrong, it did. One of the funniest things I've read in a long time.
At one point, he talks about the 'vibe' he tries to create in a studio. The goal is to create a pleasant atmosphere for everyone so the focus can be solely on the music.
Which made me wonder - Daved, from your experience, what is a Robben recording session like? Does it have a certain vibe? What can you tell us about it to give us an idea of what its like to be involved in one of these sessions?

Wow, it was as weird as funny.
But it was really funny . (and of course really weird)
While in GIT i met a guy who sounded exactly like Cotton, He was a surfer from Malibu, he looked like David Lee Roth and felt like he was high on valium (with white saliva at the corner of his lips). After 6 months of school one could clearly see he was the worst nightmare of music instructors during Live playing workshops.
Doin' the vibe stuff is just a simple trick as long you get into fatties.
Editing , that is the thing which kills me : I heard about Sylvie Vartan , France Gall , our stars from the sixties here in france , were heavily edited, not to say wildly ; it seemed normal to do so , they couldn't sing .
I learned the same about Rolling stones : doin' a 5 hours jam then leavin' to party , lettin' some "mixerman" with razor blades all night long to make 3mn HIT. If it is this way let me record right now. "Mixerman" will do great & i will get the laurels.
Now it makes more sense that Jimi Hendrix wanted his own studio since he was looking for a perfect LIVE vibe before starting to do his numerous guitars tracks.
And mixerman make us know it's not an so easy process to go through |

I think Jimi was guilty of most of the sins listed by MixerMan. The incredible thing about Monsieur Hendrix was that with all the interference (chemical & otherwise) he managed to record transcendent music. Mere mortals - Oasis & the Stone Roses quickly come to mind - generally fall at the first hurdle. |

Umm, no. Why? Is it bad live Hendrix - of which there's a lot of - or very good, which is much rarer? Isn't that the film that's basically held up in legal wrangles? |

I just looked up that show in Electric Gypsy & Setting The Record Straight. EG didn't have much information and seemed to think the show was below par but STRS was much more enthusiastic. It sounds like a great place to see Jimi's playing as he apparently doesn't jump around quite so much as at other shows. The only caveat is that the Experience is apparently quite subdued. It also says that at the time of publication of the book, 1992, the footage had yet to be released. Is it out somewhere or did you watch a boot? I'm dying to see this now. |
