Life's been really hectic around here the past three or four weeks, and I've missed jumping in on some of the forum topics. In the meantime, I've at least been doing some fun reading and listening, and have a couple of questions:

1. Anyone here signed up for the January cruise that's going to feature Robben and Anne and a bunch of other folks?

2. Anyone here looked at the new Django Reinhardt biography just out from Oxford Press? (I took the great review by Adam Gopnik in last week's New Yorker and taped it up near the Christmas Tree, hoping that someone in the family notices.)

3. Anyone here going to hear Derek Trucks when he hits the Catalyst in Santa Cruz in February? (At last, one of the dates on his web site says "CA," not "GA." You guys down South have had enough fun already.)

4. Anyone here ever listen to David Wilcox, and, if so, do you have any idea what he's talking about when he lists "miniature guitar" as one of the axes he's playing on the album "What You Whispered"?

There's a guy at work who raves about David Wilcox. And he's talking about DW albums from what seems to be from many years ago (80s?).

David is actually playing tomorow (Sunday 12/11/04) at the Tupelo Music Hall in Londonderry, NH. I've never heard of this venue, but it has a website, etc., and it's only a 25 mintue drive from my place. Anyway, David was scheduled to play at Capo's in Lowell, MA this weekend, but unfortunately, it closed and moved DW's show to this TMH. In fact, a 2nd show (9pm) was added since the 6pm show is sold out. Perhaps it would be a good take?

I have been a fan of David Wilcox for years, in fact, my son used to sing the lyrics to his songs, in his car-seat. He has his driver's permit, so that ought to tell you how long ago it was.

Check out the guitar on "Strong Medicine." (I think that is the title.)

Also, I caught Jonny Lang and Chuck Prophet last night on "Austin City Limits." Fabulous! The show is going to be aired again on December 27. Check your local listings (aw jeeeez, I sound like a commercial!)

Also a fan of David Wilcox after being introduced to his work some years ago by my brother. Haven't chased down much of his music lately, but his earlier albums, especially "How did you find me here" still rate among my favourite music.

He's a great songwriter and a great player as well. Probably the king of open tunings as far as I know - gets some really twisted things going (capos with notches cut in for certain strings, multiple capos...) but gets some of the most fantastic and sometimes beautiful chord voicings going as a result.

Not sure about the miniature guitar, but was interesting to see the setup with his Olsen acoustic when he toured here a few years ago. Was running piezo+internal mic (at a stage when few manufacturers were doing this) plus a midi interface which was used to beef out the bass notes a little bit. Sounded sensational.

(ps - if David reads this, apologies for my wife who was sitting in the front row yawning. She'd had a seres of *very* late gigs for the previous few days and not much sleep! Embarassed

Apparently, after doing a quick search, there are two David Wilcoxes, a Canadian one and an American one. Both seem to play guitar and sing although one was more James Taylor while the other one was more classic rock. Which one are you guys talking about?

I remember my brother going in search of his back-catalog in the pre-Amazon.com days and getting a very rude shock when CD's from the Canadian David Wilcox arrived. I mean, how many David Wilcox's can there be?

(2, apparently!).

Not that there's anything wrong with the Canadian one, I just prefer the acoustic singer-songwriter leanings of the USA version.

From what I briefly heard, I can still imagine that it would be quite a shock to get the Canadian one when you expected the American one or vice versa. Joe Walsh instead of James Taylor, or something. StratCat do you know if there is an Australian one, even if they don't play guitar?

More David Wilcox: Years ago (say 1989 or so) I bought his "How Did You Find Me Here" album because I really liked one of the songs (and probably heard it on "Folk Scene" on KPFK or somesuch). I didn't exactly fall in love with the guy, but my daughers did. When the younger went off to college five years ago she "borrowed" that CD, which was OK with me. A year or so ago I saw the "Whispered" CD in a store and bought it for her as a gift, without listening to it. About three months later I was up in NorCal to visit her, and talked her into driving me over to Gryphon Strings so I could spend some time checking out their always-interesting used guitar inventory. "OK Dad," she said, "then you gotta check out THIS song," upon which she put the CD into the player in her truck and put on track no. 12, "Guitar Shopping." What a great song! When I recently saw the album in a used CD rack I bought it for myself. (As a lawyer who represents some artists in the non-artistic parts of their lives, e.g., real estate, pirating stuff by burning CD's, etc., is frowned upon in our household, so if I want something one of the girls has, I go out and buy it. While they burn CD's for their friends behind Dad's back.) I've really taken a liking to the tune "When You're Ready" on that CD. And since I bought it, I've had this terrible urge to go out and buy a baritone guitar.
