I paid $129 for my Affinity Tele at the evil empire (GC). About $75 for used pickups left by people who put Bardens or whatever into their fancy Teles. And a few minutes with a 3 cornered fret dressing file (which cost something like $7). For $200 and change, I had a knock around guitar that was perfectly useful as a broken string back up to my beloved '85 Gibson 335. Even handy for the occasional "Chevrolet" or "You've Got Me Knocking".

This incredible story was on the front page of our local newspaper this morning:

"90-year-old musician is reunited with six prized guitars 3-1/2 years after they are stolen" Exclamation

According to the article, six guitars were stolen from the man's house while he was out playing in a band at the American Legion Hall. The Guitar Emporium in Louisville, Ky., had acquired all six guitars in the summer of 2001. The Guitar Emporium's owner told police he had gotten the guitars at a trade show in Texas. Although the guitars had been resold by the time police traced them back to the Guitar Emporium, police persuaded all the people who bought them from the Guitar Emporium to give them back. Police returned all six guitars to the 90-year-old man on Friday.

The full story can be read at this web link:

Cool Thanks for the link to the great story. Hope I don't have to wait 'til I'm 90, though.

Cool Status report, and probably end of story: As of today no one has called me up to confess that they're the burglar, so my black Strat is history. In the meantime, our home insurance carrier convinced me that my best bet dollow-wise was to go out and buy as close a replacement as I could. (And I had to have at least one Strat in the quiver, right?) They're sending a check for the replacement cost, less our $250 deductible. The replacement? A sort of strange American Series, three-color sunburst (Fender color 00), rosewood fingerboard, but with a Strat 50th Anniversary heel plate. Off the rack, the action was off, and the pickups not adjusted too well, and on top of that I decided to go with heavier strings (10's instead of the stock 9's), so the store's guitar tech comped me with a bunch of work (including finding an old vintage-type trem bar that would actually thread into the trem smoothly -- the one that came with the guitar wouldn't fit!), and did a great job of setting up the guitar.

All guitars should have names. (E.g., my translucent blue Carvin has a nameplate on the headtock that actually says "Blue Runner.") The tech and I both agreed that with all of the weirdness that had to be corrected, the new Strat must have come down the line in Corona on a Monday. So, around the house it's already known as "Monday's Child."
