Guitarist Carl Burnette just e-mailed me the other day that his newest CD, "Life Before Midi: Naked", has finally arrived. He wanted addresses so he could send me & Robben each a copy.
This, I believe, is the one Robben recorded in a day long jam session with Carl about a year ago.
I would imagine it will soon be available thru Carl's website. _________________ B C-ing U!

Thanks for the heads-up Daved. I'll be looking forward to hearing that one.

I checked Carl's website and it's already available through CD Baby. I listened to some of the clips and it sounds really good. Very loose and funky. http://carlburnett.com/funky.htm |

The "Life Before MIDI" currently available on Carl's site is actually his first one from 2003. This new one, "Life Before MIDI: Naked" is his followup, which I'm sure he'll make available soon.
From his website:
Quote: | Feb '04
Just back from the winter NAMM in LA...while there I cut some tracks for the next "Life Before MIDI" release "Naked".
Once again with Reggie Hamilton on Bass and Toney Moore on Drums...new to the mix are Deron Johnson on Keyboards, Curt Bisquera and Oscar Seaton on Drums,Wyzard on Bass and some soulfull trading with special guest Robben Ford on Guitar. |

Thanks for setting me straight, Daved. And I apologise if I confused anyone. If anyone has Carl's first Life Before MIDI disc I'd love to hear what they think. The samples I heard really piqued my interest. |

Carl is a super dude and a fantastic player! He gave me a copy several days ago at NAMM. Funky stuff! I have had him at my house a few times, to try my amp and jam! I love his playing.

Hi Daved/Scott.
I have been looking for some new fresh material to listen too!
Is Robben all over the new recording?
Is it very similar to his first "midi" recording?
Keep up the great contribution!
Cheer's,

DD,
I haven't recieved/ heard the new CD yet, so I don't know exactly how Carl has put it together, but....
On the day Robben recorded, they spent the whole day, from about 10 to 6, with keys and a rythym section. Carl would introduce to the players key riffs, ideas, and arrangements that he was looking for and then they would jam for awhile, exchanging ideas, and then finally improvise a couple of takes till they came up with a track or 2 that everyone was satisfied with.
Then they'd move on to the next concept Carl had in mind. It was all very loosely free form with shared artistry & input... which was the format Carl was looking for. _________________ B C-ing U!

Interesting concept. Listening to him talk at times, I've always felt that Robben wanted to do a "Kind of Blue" style record. And that Tiger Walk was one such attempt that great as it was, didn't really get the same kind of synergistic vibe. It sounds like Carl found a forum to make that happen. It's great that Robben got to play off of it with him. _________________ There are no such things as wrong notes, there's only the look on your face.

Robben said at a clinic during his Tiger Walk tour that those guys on the Tiger Walk sessions cost $3,000/day, each! I wonder if he could have afforded to take a Kind of Blue approach on that record. |

Carl's new disc is great. For those who have never heard Carl, he is a fantastic player with superb funk chops to boot. Stylistically, he sounds like Carl, but I hear elements of Beck, Ford, and Wayne Krantz (although Carl tells me that element developed on its own)
Robben is all over tracks 3, 4, and 9. Branford rips on track 10.
All in all a fine disc. Be warned, it is groove oriented and although the tunes have nice heads, the disc is really a superb jam. I like this sort of thing so it was cool with me!
