Bluerunner,

All the digital recording schemes are lossy. Except for direct copying of a CD on a computer. The problem is that most consumers aren't aware of the difference and seem to think they can do the kind of transfer scheme you discribed. When I convert my recordings to MP3 for the web site, I can really hear the difference. But I have a high end audiophile system in the living room and have been listening to live instruments for 45 years. Played back though ear buds or desktop computer speakers, it probably doesn't make any difference. Overcoming the noise in a car, it probably doesn't make any difference. More dumbing down in our society. Like using synths instead of real musicians. We accept the facsmile as good enough. If that facsmile is noticeable better than a 20 year old cassette recorder we are willing to ignore our ears and accept that it is as presented by the purveyors, just as good as the "real thing". When you pick up your guitar, that's the real thing.

You'd have to ask Elizabeth. She drove Blob to an Ojai clinic and presumably has seen them in the same room, although I can't swear to this.

Hey, I'm not getting in the middle of this one...NO WAY!

Acording to a post from Daved awhile back he did. But the way the registration works, I don't even think the admins know who a user is. Course you don't have to be a member to read this either. I have a buddy who is very connected in the music scene who reads this all the time and gives me his opinions on various posts, but he's never registered or posted anything himself. We sometimes forget that this is a "public" forum. And that Alexander Dumble, Robben, or anyone from Eric Clapton to Paul McCartney might be reading things that we post here.

That’s not true. There are many lossless digital formats: Shorten (.shn) and Flac are two very popular ones. If anyone is a fan of jambands (The Dead, Phish etc) you most likely familiar with those formats.

With tape traders there was a desire for a lossless compression scheme. Essentially if everyone trades shorten files (and never encodes to mp3) the 1000th copy of a show should sound like the original, with no generation loss (with cassettes) and no frequency loss (as with mp3’s). They explain it much better on sites like http://etree.org/index.html or http://flac.sourceforge.net/index.html.

In any event, bands like Phish for example, recorded their live shows and posted them online for people to DL. I think a show costs like $15 but you can DL it in mp3 or flac. I think it would be great if Robben did this. It’s a great revenue stream for him, it thwarts bootleggers & there is a great documentation of his work going forward. I think Phish did it themselves, but there are companies that would set up the infrastructure.

Just my $0.02.

I find this a complicated subject, and one that tests my willpower constantly. I have a bootleg of one of Robben's concerts from a couple years ago. When I bought it I didn't realize it was a boot, but the damage was done. Robben sees no money from the boots, and that just isn't right. Besides the revenue issues, there is also the problem of subquality recording out there the artist doesn't want available, as it misrepresents what they really sound like. On the boot I have, the mix is horrid and Robben's guitar tone sounds very poor. Having seen Robben live, I know that this isn't an accurate representation of how he sounds, but not everyone realizes that.

Like many fans, I would love to be able to buy authorized live or unreleased material. Yes, this could be a valuable revenue source, but it also takes time, the logistics and money to set up. Would it be cool to walk out of a show and purchase a cd or, even better, a dvd of the performance? Absolutely, and I expect technology to eventually become portable and affordable enough to make it happen as commonly as buying a t-shirt after the show.

Having said all that, I hope there is another live dvd coming out. Very Happy

It's already being done. I mentioned Phish's efforts, but also Clear Channel runs "Instant Live" (www.instantliveconcerts.com) at their venues. You can buy the show on the way out the door or online.

It's my understanding that The Allman Bros stopped allowing tapers and now you can order a show or the whole tour. I know what you are thinking...I asked in another thread, no plans to have instant live for the G Allman shows. Doh!

I couldn't agree with you more! I think Robben and many Jazz, Blues and Fusion artists are missing the boat on this!

I would buy every show!

We have discussed this at great lengths on this board before. Do a search on Phish.

Hey Capt'n.

(As I'm sure you know) I posted some of the same issues/questions to Mr. Henderson in the Q&A thread on his boards.

Hopefully when/if Robben opens for ABB, he'll get in on the Instant Live stuff that ABB does on it's tours.
