Hi,
I'm Jonny and I live in London, I've recently turned 14. On Robben's upcoming shows in London, from what I've seen, they are both at the Jazz Cafe. As far as I know, the jazz cafe is strictly an over-18 only venue. Thus me and my friend can't attend. What do you think the chances are of next time Robben comes to play in London, he plays at a venue which all ages can attend. This would be very much appreciated by Robben's younger fans.
Thanks for reading. _________________ -Jonny |

Hey Bluelobster,
Robben's gigs are sexy stuff and youngsters shouldn't be allowed.
Too much emotion.

We have the same problem in Boulder. My 17 year old guitar slinging son loves Derek Trucks. Derek played right here at the Boulder Theater. But you have to be 21 to get into the show.
BTW he is also getting into Robben big time! He loves Tiger Walk, the two Jing Chi cds and Supernatural. When I came home with the new CD yesterday, he swiped it...
We must find a way to get young people exposed to this music in a live setting! It's those experiences that will inspire them to keep the legacy alive! _________________ www.hendersounds.com

I find this thing bizzarre....
I went to my first gig when I was 13 and saw more gigs in my teens than I did during the rest of my life (pls. note: I am not 21 as some of ladies might think ).
strange stuff

How silly. Jonny, if you cannot get your mom/dad/sister/brother/cousin/uncle or aunt to take you, I will take you there myself. Congratulations on your excellent music taste. We need to encourage young ears to appreciate the finer sounds in life. For so many, it is an acquired taste.
(You know, I posted this reply earlier today, but it disappeared into cyberspace. It must be that horrible new governor we have. Uggggggghh!)

Let's put some pressure on the artists, too, to get the younger fans involved. Many clubs will host all age shows - no smoking and drinking - and many artists participate in these opportunities if they feel it is profitable, or heaven forbid, they feel a commitment or connection to the larger community of listeners! But if the artist is not interested it will not happen. Personally, I take my kids to any gig I can, even if they only get to watch the soundcheck. Where there is a will... |

Jonny,
Don't give up too easily. I would think there's a chance you could get in if you go with an adult (as others suggested) and call the management of the club before you go to see if you can work it out. If you just show up they probably wouldn't want to bother with it but if you take the time to call before hand you might get lucky.
Good luck! |

I have to be 18, with or without an adult. I might as well try. The venue seats around 344, or something like that. I wonder what the chances are of me seeing Robben round back if I wait outside the venue afterwards. Probably very slim, but worth a try I guess. _________________ -Jonny |

Jonny, telephone the place and ask them...the worst they can say is, "No." Then, you go to plan B (have not worked that out, but there always is one!) Robben is most gracious and generous meeting and chatting with fans, so if worst comes to worst, and they really won't let you in (and you can't figure out some sneaky way to get beyond those rules... did I really say that???) let the management know that you are there, and I would bet Robben will not only let you catch a glimpse of him, but will also talk with you.
Even clubs that have strict age policies can be flexible when asked. (They can always give you some special bracelet, so everyone knows you are "Jail bait.") I didn't even realize that there were such strict prohibitions in England. Contrary to what Sr. Marin wrote, Robben's performances are appropriate for all, particularly guitarists who are in their formative years. Of course, no one thinks Marin is 21 either, so that will give you some idea as to how to approach his comments!
Sorry Marin, but you know you had that coming! _________________ www.elizabethgage.com |
