After seeing this show last night I've come to the conclusion that Victor must be an alien from another planet. No mortal human can do what he did with a bass guitar last night. Sometimes it's hard to put into words how incredible a performance can be, but I'll try.
This show is an all out R&B funkathon. Victors 2 brothers play guitar and keys, 2 girl singers who also dance and rap., and an incredible drummer. Most of the songs were originals that would turn into jams and go into short covers. Throughout the course of both sets they did funky covers of Earth,Wind and Fire ( Can't Hide Love), James Brown ( Sex Machine), Led Z ( Kashmir), Jimi Hendrix (Fire), George Clinton ( One nation Under a Groove), Chaka Khan ( Tell Me Something Good ), and Sly Stone ( Family Affair ). Victor's solo in the 2nd set started with lovely versions of Amazing Grace and Danny Boy and grew into one of the funkiest bass solos I've had the good fortune to hear. Another tune was called " Bass Tribute" with Victor paying homage to Jaco,Stanley Clarke, Victor bailey and Bootsy Collins, with Victor playing in the style of all. Another tune was played in 11/8 time and worked it's way back to 4/4 ( in one step time singnatures) throughout the course of an extended jam.
The performers also had a spoken message of peace, love, family and a belief in a higher power. This was not pretentious but very appropriate for these trying times we live in.
For those going to this show expecting the Newgrass Victor that plays with Bela Fleck, or the fusion Victor that plays with Chick Corea and Scott Henderson, they may be disapointed. For those who want to get their funk on, watch old guys ( like me ) dance around and make fools of themselves, and witness extraordinary chops and musicianship, and go home feeling better about oneself and the world we live in, those folks will LOVE this show.
This is the start of a national tour for Victor and he will covering most of the US. Catch the Soul Circus at a venue near you and have a wonderful time. Im' out............................Fingerlakes |
