I went to see Karizma on Saturday night. It was quite the line-up - David Garfield (of course) on keys, Lenny Castro percussion, Larry Klimas on saxes, Jimmy Johnson on bass, Oscar Seaton on drums and James Harrah on guitar. It was a pretty good show, although nothing like the quite wonderful cd, Document with Mike Landau on guitar. Jimmy Johnson was wonderful as always, both holding down the groove and with a few spectacular solos. Seaton also showed himself to be a young man to watch. Not very flashy or showy but keeping a solid tight groove and pushing the soloists as needed. Harrah, on the other hand, was a bit of a disappointment. Tone awash (adrift?) with delay, he used the volume pedal to get an almost attackless sound, somewhat like Holdsworth, but with a much more pedestrian harmonic vocabulary. He never really soared, so maybe he was having a bad night. The true lowlight of the show, though, was a muzak version of Let's Stay Together. It was so saccharine that my mate took the opportunity to go outside and appease his nicotine addiction.
