In term of the photos, it's my understanding that the flash photos really bother his eyes. At gigs, it's a real big distraction to him and I think it gets him off his game. Outside of gigs, I think he's generally cool with photos as long as there's not flash involved. Last year when I went to his clinic in Ojai, some of the guys wanted to take some pictures and he was OK with it, but he asked them not to use the flash.

Very Happy Could it be a few of you folks are finally starting to get it?!? Good for you! Spread the word.... please!!!
Now, if we could just get folks to put away those damn video cameras... Wink

Question for the form, why is Robben so camera shy. He came down on a female photographer at Joe's and asked her to back off? And at the National Guitar Workshop I attended last summer, he wouldn't let me get a photo, just an autograph.

B-vue,

Robben USUALLY is very tolerant of photos. There are really only 3 things that negatively factor in:

FLASH: Robben used to allow photographs for many, many years, but he HATES flash and he finally got so tired of people flaunting their disrespect for him by blatantly ignoring his wishes and continuing to fire flash in his face over and over and over and over and over again, even after his repeatedly begging them from the stage to please turn off the flash (And this continues even to this very day!) that he just says, "Maybe just making the policy a flat NO PHOTOS AT ALL will be something they can understand."

REPETITION: Robben USUALLY doesn't mind a photo or two as a keepsake and rememberence, but these folk that fire off rolls and rolls of film iritate him. As he will ask them from the stage: "Don't you think you have enough? Just what is it you plan to do with all those photographs?"
Are they there to enjoy his show, or did they come to turn the event into a photosession? Even authorized photographers generally take only a few pictures, usually without flash, only for the first 2 or 3 songs, and then go away. That's all they need for their articles and reviews.

But then, there are people, like the guy in Oslo the other night, who will stand directly in front of Robben's line of sight, literally only a few feet away, at eye level, shooting photo after photo after roll after roll (And, he started out with flash till I told him to cut it out).

Try this:
Have someone you don't know come to your work and stand directly in front of you with a camera stuck to their face, continually in your way, sticking their lenses (some of them... HUGE!) in your face for 2 hours as you are trying to concentrate...
*CLICK* - *CLICK* - *CLICK* - *CLICK* - *CLICK* - *CLICK* - *CLICK* - *CLICK* - *CLICK* - *CLICK* - *CLICK* - Etc., Etc. -
...and see how much quality that distraction allows you to focus on your job!
I guarantee you will get very irritated , very fast!
It's called "Papparazzi". It's what KILLED Lady DI. Crying or Very sad

IRRITATION: .....Ruins it for everyone! When people continue to do these things, especially even after having been asked to cut it out, Robben gets a bad taste in his mouth and just says, "Forget it! NO one gets NOTHIN' tonight".

If he prefered a 'No-Photos' policy at the function you attended... someone probably pissed him off earlier.
That simple. Wink

Robben was very gracious when I saw him at a national guitar workshop 3 years ago. He didn't mind posing for photos after his session but I and everyone else that I heard asked first. He even put up with my pitiful attempt at conversation when we were standing outside the office together for a couple of minutes. He did state his photo policy very clearly at the start of his seminar. I had a very small 35mm with no way to turn off the flash, so I just held it shut and took pictures anyway, hoping the would turn out. One or two did, and I am happy with those. I would rather hear Robben play and remember those moments than to have him upset and off of his game because I just had to have a picture of him doing the that G#7b9/Ab chord!

Robben is still considering what he wants to do towards recording a live DVD later this year.
He mentioned the other day that he has recently spoken with both Steve Potts (the primary drummer on his last CD) and Steve Cropper (whom Robben has recorded with in the past and remain friends), both of whom have expressed high interest in what he wants to do.
This is, of course, still in the formative stages so I can say no more at this point, but those of you who can correctly 'connect the dots' with the info I've just given you will have an idea Idea of the band/concert he'd like to put together for recording. Wink

Daved, too cool. I've always wanted to hear Robben playing over someone who comp'ed like he does. As inspiring as it is to hear him play with Carl Burnett, Chris Cain, or whoever, the feel is different. Those players comping styles come from a different place. I've often thought that Garth Webber would be complementary. But Steve Cropper would put Robben right in his zone. Jimmy Earl would bridge things nicely. Although the muscular nature of Myron Dove's playing together with Steve Potts would create a really solid foundation and counterpoint for the lighter, funkier playing of Robben and Cropper. Toss in Jeff Babco's empathy for Robben's playing and you'd have my live recording dream team.

I'm just excited at the prospect of hearing a well done recording of Robben live. The level of inpiration between an audience and a stage full of great musicians can bring truly spectacular things from him. That those of us fortunate to have witnessed can't really explain to those who have to subsist on studio recordings.

Jeff Babco is a monster player. I'd love to see him on that DVD! Of course, I've never seen Robben pick a less-than-excellent muscian yet so I'm sure whoever he selects will be fantastic.

Ya'll aren't "connecting the dots" as Daved advised........Steve Potts and Cropper play togther in some little, old, obscure band......

Anyway, whatever band the agent (or BOOKER) puts together for this DVD, I know it will fit Robben to a "T"..........If that show was anywhere in driving distance, I would hop right in my MG to get there.

Well, gotta go....TIME IS TIGHT!!!

Wink

I'm with you, jimfog, even if I haven't had an MG in years. (That was such a great car!) If it took a plane flight, I might even go...I just hate to miss out on "once in a lifetime" shows. Been there and done that way too many times.

Thank you Daved, for a great game of "Connect the dots." Cool

Thanks Daved, when you put it that way it makes sense.

Side note: on your suggestions for changing strings. I tried the one above 3 below in conjunction with an entirely new manufacturers set of strings I've never tried before. I noticed I get a better ring on hammer on and pull off notes. Could the positive change be in the winding or strickly the different strings then I normally use? Just looking for your opinion here.
