This was in my local newspaper about a week ago:

Hendrix had right skills, right look for legendary status.

Jimi Hendrix not only had the skills to become a rock legend- he apparently had the right look as well.

A recent poll found that Hendrix had the best "guitar face"- the look guitarists get when trying to nail a high note or power chord.

Hendrix received 24 percent of the 3,000 votes cast online by the public and a poll by some 20 celebrity judges. B.B. King captured 18 percent of the vote, followed by Angus Young of AC/DC with 16 percent.

Gary Lucas, guitarist for Gods and Monsters, said he voted for for Hendrix because he "channeled all the soulful ecstasy of the universe through his hands, and this was naturally mirrored in his face."

The poll by on-demand television service Mag Rack accompanied a contest to find the best amateur guitar face. Les Campbell of Nicholasville, KY, was chosen the winner from more than 600 contestants.

In his photo, Campbell, a sound and recording engineer, showcases a classic headbanging Fu Manchu mustache and Elvis Presley sneer- as well as a resemblance to Metallica frontman James Hetfield, according to several of the judges.

He said his entry was from his heavy-metal playing days in the 1980s with the band Jack-in-Irons.

"Guitar face is a spur of the moment thing, something you have no awareness or control over, " Campbell said in a statement.

Cool It wasn't long after I started cello lessons in the 4th grade the my mother started joking about how I "played with my mouth." I.e., "cello face." Just this past Christmas while playing guitar and singing Christmas songs with the family she mentioned it again. Only now it's "guitar face." 43 years later. (Oh yeah, and you want a "guitar face"? How about Keith Richard?)

Great story, BlueRunner! "Cello-face" is Laughing pretty funny! Very Happy I'm glad to hear you've transcended to a guitar-face... Smile

Reminds me of my guitar teacher's band's lead singer- "Nikki". The band's website (BarrNoneBand.com) was recently updated with new band member profiles, and Nikki bravely admitted that her childhood musical experience started with an accordian! Of course, her parents are to blame... Twisted Evil Smile

I wish I could play well enough to produce my own personally-identifiable guitar-face. Perhaps that'll be my measuring stick- the day I unconsciously invent my own guitar-face, hopefully while wailing on a deep trance-like soulfully sweeping solo... Laughing Cool Smile

When I first started playing guitar, I would make this face somewhere between Munch's the scream and the Evil Dead. My drummer brother would tell me 'Mate, you gotta lose that face or people will get sick watching you play.' Unfortunately, try as I might to smile and look happy while I play ala Monsieur Ford, that face dogs me to this day. I'm sure cello-face is a much more pleasant experience.

Absolutely right, Captain. Here's another good one, check out Joe Walsh on the dvd from Clapton's guitar festival. Robert Cray is good, too.

Matt Smith is a guitar clinician for Hamer. He always says that guitar face isn't because we're feeling the music so much, but because bending those strings"hurts like hell!". There may be something to that!

I have two guitar faces- I like the one where someone starts talkin' to me while I'm playing and I just look at 'em- and they walk away in frustration. I'm on another plane, man- hear you, but who cares?

Of course, the other one makes my daughter run away, saying "Oh my God, he did NOT make that face, did he? In public?" That one I do on purpose. Wink

It's that second face that's fun to make. Any time you can make one of your children embarassed - it's a good thing. Speaking of the first face, I actually had someone walk up to the stage while I was in the middle of a solo and tap me on the arm! That's pretty high up on the ladder of jerkdom.

I think it's time for a contest- vote for the best guitar face amongst us forum members. Having different categories might be fun- baddest face, scariest face, happiest face...

The guitar face to end all guitar faces - Joe Walsh's guitar face on the Crossroads Guitar Festival DVD... Love the "Police Line - Do Not Cross" guitar strap too.
