For anyone interested in moving beyond scales, theory and chops, i.e. the intellectual and mechanical aspects of playing, and actually playing music, I would recommend a book by Kenny Werner called "Effortless Mastery, Liberating the Master Musician Within." The title is a bit misleading as it is not about learning to play without exerting any effort, but is about letting the music come out without a conscious effort (e.g. without thinking about "appropriate scales", etc.), and actually requires a lifetime of effort. It's essentially a Zen approach to playing, so it would be a good book for anyone who found Zen Guitar by Philip Sudo to be helpful. Although not written for guitar players, I believe this book describes the essence of how Robben plays the guitar. Check it out.
Hey Bill,
Glad to hear a recommend on this book. It's one i've thought about for awhile. I feel that i could maybe use an approach like that at this point. It's available thru Aebersold right?
