Happy Cinco de Mayo Exclamation

It's wonderful how Border Music has so deeply influenced all genres of American music. Great bands like Los Lobos, and the beautiful music of Dave Hidalgo, was my first exposure to popular music in a foreign language. Also, I've been enjoying the new music by Los Super Seven.

There were also some great 70s bands that were led by Mexican-Americans, such as El Chicano. I just recently found El Chicano's Viva Tirado on cassette in a $1.88 bargain bin at the record store. WOW Shocked

I bet they were great in concert !

I'm glad to see someone else in the spirit of Cinco de Mayo! Very Happy

Los Lonely Boys is a Mex-Am band I'd like to see live. Unfortunately, both dates at one of the local summer music venues in my area (the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom) sold out very quickly, before I was able to buy.

Great night for a Dos Equis or two up here in New England. Anybody care to join me? Very Happy

Los Lonely Boys are fabulous. I have seen them twice (once at the KFOG concert for Kids, with Robben!) I don't even like beer, but I would drink one with all of you!

Happy Cinco de Mayo. Who is going to the Santa Cruz Blues Festival???

Cinco de Mayo fell on the same day as birthday #52 for me me. I celebrated with a long day at work, drove an hour to watch #2 son play in a baseball game, and later drove #1 son and all of his bands equipment to their practice place as they prepare to play at a high school prom this weekend. About 9 pm i shared a bottle of local seyval with my wife and crashed. All in all, a great day.

Since I haven't seen the band live, I'm not sure if this qualifies

, but I've been listening to a live cd of Los Straightjackets - Damas et Caballeros.
Some great surf guitar and lot's of fun stuff. Dangerous when driving, as I have to keep an eye on my speedometer when listening.

As for Cinco de Mayo, someone made the mistake of giving me a citrus juicer and a 1.75 liter 'jug' of Patron for my birthday. (Guess Costco is good for something). So, it was Margaritaville around here....from what I can remember.

The lineup at Santa Cruz is wonderful ! Go & enjoy ! It will be great festival. I'm hoping to see Chris Cain later this summer when he plays a festival in Delaware. He rarely makes it to Florida Crying or Very sad

I'm going to a festival next weekend in Ybor City -- Tropical Heatwave. There will be 30 bands on six stages, playing every kind of music you can imagine. I have a hard time deciding where to start and end, but I definitely want to see Alejandro Escovedo, Laura Love, & Mofro.

I saw the Eric Steckel Band a few years ago at Musikfest, when he was about 11 years old ! He was playing in a band with his guitar teacher back then. Last summer he toured with John Mayall... and he's the youngest Bluesbreaker ever! It will be fun to see him again.

If anyone has seen any of the other bands on this list, please let me know.

Check out Brave Combo if you can - nuclear polka. Way cool. They are from up in the Dallas/Denton area and are always lots of fun.

Off topic. Mexican beer - OK. I just don't understand this. This is some of the worst beer in the world, Cinco de Mayo or not. I was in Berlin and Sweden last summer and people were ordering this swill. In Germany!!!! What are these people thinking. Yuck.

Heatwave was incredible fun. Very Happy

14-year old Eric Steckel played a great set of blues -- a combination of originals and classics. He's a very talented young player with good singing voice. I liked his Texas-style blues ("Me & My Guitar" and an original, "Jaywalkin'") the best.

Tampa's own Four Star Riot and Jake Brennan & the Confidence Men (from Boston) were fun alt-rock bands with a lot "goofy boy" charm. I also caught a lively set by alt-country band Reckless Kelly.

My strategy was working great up until thousands of fans packed the patio at the bandshell to see Laura Love, followed by Alejandro Escovedo, at the same stage. I was near the front of the stage for Laura Love, and didn't want to lose my space for Alejandro, so I missed seeing Mofro and Brave Combo. But it was the right choice -- last night's Alejandro Escovedo performance was one of the best concerts I've ever seen. He had a seven-piece band that was airtight. I don't think they could've played a better show.

Alejandro Escovedo is often credited for being a pioneer of cowpunk music. I listened to a lot of alt-rock in the 80s (bands inspired by Alex Chilton and Alejandro Escovedo, as well as British punk bands), and I still enjoy seeing a good alt-rock show.

Alejandro's current music is "Roots music" to me. It's got a natural, earthy groove. His lyrics often tell a story. It's passionate, textured music, involving instruments such as cello and violin. Alejandro has a wonderful voice and a strong "spiritual" vibe onstage. He played both acoustic and electric guitar last night and he was strong and vibrant. He was accompanied last night by three members of a musical project called Screen Door Music (www.screendoormusic.com). Their web site has some very nice samples. Brian Standefer played cello and he was phenomenal. The entire band was amazing. Definitely one of my favorite concerts EVER.

I also enjoyed Laura Love & her band very much. She is a very witty, very funky, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist (and yes, book author), who had me in stitches last night. She played bass and was accompanied by a violinist, acoustic guitar player, electric guitar player and drummer. Laura Love has as many different voices as personality traits ! One minute cooing in a sweet sweet voice, and next she is cackling like the wicked witch of the West, or throwing some Afro-American slang at you -- all while thumping on the bass and shaking her big butt ("Mahbootay") across the stage. She's also a world-class yodeler (I love a good yodel Exclamation

). Laura Love is a great musician and a very entertaining performer. I recently read her book, "You Ain't Got No Easter Clothes - A Memoir." It's an interesting (but gut wrenching) read about her tragic childhood.

That's about as much fun as I can have in one night.
