Hey gang,

My blues band is going to look at doing "Something for the Pain". We've worked up a rough chart, and I thought I'd throw this out there for anyone who might be interested.

I had two goals in mind here.:

First, for anyone interested in playing this tune who hasn't tried to chart it out yet, here's a head start.

Second, for anyone who HAS played this tune, I'd be happy to here any corrections or improvements to what we've come up with--we're still debating a couple of the changes. I'll have a better feel for it once we've had a full-band tryout, which should happen tonight. I'll follow up if we end up with any significant changes.

I love the driving groove on this tune, the leads, the lyrics and vox--just a great tune all around.

Note that I've written the main chord as "A" here, but it's really just the guitar riff. Probably an A dorian thing here I think.

If memory serves, the riff is:

hit the low A and let ring, play the E, F#, and G

low A again, then G down to F#

an A5 chord, quick bounce on the F# (or maybe a D/A)

Something for the Pain (Robben Ford, Kevin Bowe)

Intro: 16 bars of A w/riff

Verse (play twice):
Gsus4 G Gsus4 G
A A A A

First chorus:
F F E7 E7
A A A A
A A A A

Repeat Verse

Second chorus:
Dm Dm
F F
Gsus G
A A A A
A A A A

Bridge:
Bbm Bbm Bb9 Bb9 Eb9 Eb9
Bbm Bbm Bb9 Bb9 Eb9 Eb9 (E)

Solo over:
A A A A D D
A A A A D D

Repeat Chorus 2

Does anybody know if Kevin Bowe is the same guy that wrote 'Riverside' with Kenny Wayne Shepherd? Anyone know how he and Robben hooked up? Any other songs they've written together?

Kevin B. has a web site:

http://www.kevinbowe.com/

I think he's got discography info there, so you may want to check that.

He did co-write Don't Deny Your Love, but there may be others.

I know he also wrote several tunes on an Etta James album, including Blues is My Business, which my group has played--fun tune.

Yes Salty, it's the same Kevin Bowe. But most recently he has been touring with Paul Westerberg. They ended their recent tour at House of Blues in Orlando... and although I didn't see it with my own eyes, Paul Westerberg DID destroy another guitar onstage that night (just like Daved described in one of his previous posts).

I heard that Charlie Mingus was the first musician to do this kind of thing on stage. Is it true?

A few years ago, Kevin kept a journal on his web site, and there was some mention of his work/meeting with Robben Ford, as well as lots of other artists. I'm not sure if it's still online. Maybe you can find something using The WayBack Machine...

It's a little freaky how all this stuff is stored online, forever & ever Shocked Embarassed
