Hittin' The Note magazine, issue #45, is now available featuring an interview with Gregg Allman about the Gregg Allman & Friends tour earlier this year.
------------------------------------------
"...Playing with them was one of the finest musical experiences I think I've ever had, and the guys were just so wonderful. We all became real close, and the fans were great- we sold out all but one show..."
"...So Neil [Larson] and I kept in close touch, and around August of last year, he called me and said 'Listen man - have you ever heard of Robben Ford?' I told him yeah, I'd heard of him, so Neil sent me two of Robben's records. I listened to the first two songs on one of them, and the tone he had - I said, 'Man, I don't need to hear any more. He's our guy.' Robben plays real fluid-like, like old school-type guitar. I saw a chance for a real change, and I love change - I really do. I'm a little afraid of it, as is everybody, but this thing with Robben worked out pretty good for me..."
"...I guess Neil caught him at the right moment, because Willie agreed. Neil told me he'd also been talking to Steve Potts, and of course I knew him from Booker T. and the MG's. That was exciting to me, because I've had a hard time with drummers. Neil says, 'So you want to get together and do it this year?' and I said, 'Absolutely!' I mean, I'd been dreaming about going out on the road with Willie Weeks, but little did I know that I'd also be going out with Steve Potts and Robben Ford. They are the nicest people in the world, and funny - Robben Ford, man, he is something else! [Laughs] Me and him became very good friends..."
"...Robben Ford - I can't say enough about what he contributed. His playing on 'Midnight Rider' and 'Melissa' was completely his style. I told him from the beginning, 'Listen to the song, but don't listen to the guitar, and do it your way - as long as it's not in the third orbit somewhere!' [Laughs] I just love what he did..."
