Sorry, but the only advice I can offer on the G string problem is to make sure the nut is cut properly.
I have the pickups on my R9 coil tapped. The Antiquities that I put in that guitar are 4-wire, so I just put a push-push switch (which is already broken by the way) on one of the tone pots and used that to switch modes. It works quite well, until the switch breaks. I'm going to replace it with a push-pull switch one of these days.

It depends on the guitar. I used two of the Historic kits for my R9 and 335, and the regular kit (long shaft pots) for my '93 Les Paul.

Here's what I'm using at the moment. First, here's a shot of my latest baby, an '05 Thorn Artisan Deluxe #091. Tried and true wood combo with mahogany neck/body and a quilted maple top and an ebony fingerboard. This guitar has WCR Goodwood pickups.
Here's a quickie group shot of what is getting used now. Guitars are left to right: PRS McCarty, the Thorn, Fender CS Tele Jr., Fender CS Strat. Amps are a Mesa Boogie (top of cabs out of pic) along with a Fuchs DRRI combo. The cabs are a Mesa Recto 2 x 12, and a Custom Audio Amplifiers 4 x 10. The pedalboard houses TIM and CJOD overdrive pedals, a Boss DM2 delay, a Teese RMC3LE wah, a TC Electronics Chorus/Flanger and a Boss Auto-wah, all powered by a Voodoo Lab Pedalpower and wired up with George L's.

Can you describe the differences between the Elites and the Ultras? I'm also trying to find out what Robben was using on the New Morning DVD.

Roughly, the Ultra's are semi hollow with either maple or spruce top, ebony fingerboard and block markers. The Elite is a thinner body, solid with a maple top, dot markers and a pau ferro fingerboard. I'm fairly certain the guitar in the video is an Elite, but Daved should be able to confirm that.

I didn't know that the later Custom Shop Elites were thinner. My 84 Esprit is chambered, maple top with no flame, and has the dot inlays. It also didn't come with a tap switch.
Robben did have one sunburst flame top solid body with Fralin humbuckers around the Tiger Walk time period. Prior to that, the Fender catalog listed the Elite as chambered, maple top, dot markers while the Ultra had the gold hardware, large inlays and spruce top.

All the Elite's I have seen, including my own, were the thin, solid body type. But I heard recently from Paul in the UK that they did make one chambered one for Robben. I think a chambered Elite would be really cool. I've seen Robben with a few different Elites over the years. Still one of my favorite guitars.

What do you guys think of the pre- versus post Custom Shop versions of the Fender RF? From what I understand, the CS versions started in 1994. Steve, I think your is pre-custom shop. Is that correct? Are these still nice guitars? I've got to think that they are. All of the early Blue Line stuff would have been pre-CS. I went back and looked at my Blues and Beyond videos and those look like pre-CS.
Bill and Dave, it looks like yours are all Custom Shop--what do you think? |

I have a couple of the MIJ guitars too, a Flame Ultra and an RF model. As far as I'm concerned they are fine guitars, but they do have a thinner neck than the later Custom Shop guitars, and the pickups need to be replaced. I know that Robben had some of the early MIJ guitars (he gave one or two to Garth who is still using them), but keep in mind that Robben also had custom made prototypes, including the main guitar that he used for many years.

| I have a friend who is a local repairman who used to roadie for the Doobie Brothers and also used to either roadie or repair some of Robben's instruments, and he says Robben at that time was using the Japanese models, and this would be true I guess, as the Custom Shop wasn't even in existence yet. |
