Marin, you paint with too broad a brush. No need or cause to disparage everyone at the Gear Page. But I agree that something unseemly is going on in that thread.
Since the whole controversy is not at all clear from the thread, could you please explain what you know about it - i.e., how it arose, who is involved, etc? |

I agree. I should have wrote "CERTAIN guys at the Gear Page". I post there myself as well. I didn't mean to generalise and I apologise for it.
This is what I know:
The Gear Page has a Member Soundclick section in which members post their own soundclips. The level is pretty high, there are good players.
On Feb 25th a member called Charles posts a thread called "My collab with scottl". Scottl is Scott Lerner who we all know. Charles claims that he did the opening solo and then Scott does the second bit.
When listening to it, the tune is clearly "Deja Blue" from Robben Ford. The track is comes from this instructional book (with CD):
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1576235815/103-8903952-4782250?v=glance
The first solo, which Charles claims to be his, is imho clearly Robben. The second solo is clearly Scott Lerner. The original play-along track comprises an opening solo by Robben and then the rest of the track has the backing section only to allow for the student to play over it. Scott Lerner plays over this bit.
Whilst other members are posting favourable review, I pointed out that clip sounds like Robben's track. In a second post, I even post the link of the intructional book.
The thread is immediately deleted (I presume by the originating user, Charles). Curious, eh?
However, other members managed to read what I posted and have asked Charles about the clip in the thread "Richard Bornman's Jazz clips" which I posted up here.
When asked about the clip, Charles is avoiding the answer and claims to be surprised that it's a Robben track.
Judge for yourselves. I kept a copy of Charles's and Scott Lerners version of Deja Blue. The first solo is supposedly Charles's and the second is Scott's:
http://www.marinblues.it/gpage/charlesandscott.mp3
and this is Robben's original:
http://www.marinblues.it/gpage/robben.wma
Well? Is this detailed enough as an explanation?
Opinions?

Charles is full of shit.
That's clearly Robben. Even if I didn't have that instructional book you refer to it would be difficult to convince me its not him. But I have the book and that is Robben playing the first solo.
Nice playing by Scott on the second solo too!
Jim

Is the track the same one or different?
Blob, I guess that some guys consider operating a CD player as legitimate musicianship.

Something similar happened at the Seymour Duncan forum. A guy called Butch Snyder was posting someone elses clips (some real heavy chicken-picking, real good stuff). He built himself a reputation on the forum (and other boards, like Harmony Central) and then the guy who really made the clips intervened at the forum and boy.....was that embarassing. I don't think Butch hangs around the forum any longer.
He took the clip from a web site of a shop advertising some music gear. The shop called the original artist telling him that he had plagiarised Butch Snyders tracks!!!
I think that Butch's explanation was that he didn't have an appropriate recording of his playing so he posted something unknown, yet similar to his.
The interesting thing is that he kept doing it over and over again......

Thanks, Marin. Now I understand much better what happened. It appears that the same guy is palming off famous artists works as his own at other forums as he did at the Gear Page.
We all know Scott Lerner, and I know he would never participate in such a pointless hoax. I have to assume that he was duped into contributing his solo segment without realizing that it was a copyrighted work of Robben Ford. I trust you would agree. |

Scott gave a brief explanation in Gear Page thread. I have no reason not to believe him.

By the way, his profile (Charles) at the Gear Page says he's from Canada and he calls himself "The French dude".

Marin it happened that a "greg-b" mailed you a link from an european guy playing on déjà blues : you mailed him back that was only Robben playing first , 'coz it's a work track.
Greg-B started a Brand-new thread kind of "This guy is a liar " instead of PMailing him. So if you don't know frenchies i am sure you have often meditate about the weird ways human beings act.
Needless to say the week end was as "hot" as the salem witches trial, i mean there was a lot of people (guit.players?internet addicts?) who don't give a fuch(Hey look at my pun!!!!Hey i am doing HUMOR!!!!Naaaa Come on Pierre don't be so Dumble ) about Robben FORD but was there willing to lynch the guy who was hiding till sunday night ('coz he might be an active forumer and a good player he didn't have any logic explanation, but that another story since i am only a lurker on this board).
So you bet man , you're the terminator . You were even quoted on this thread. |
