I think you need a spare! Wink

Hi Henk,

good to see you around!

I would be interested to hear your comments on the ZD tone and dynamics, being as you are an advocate of all things RF and Dumble Smile

Here's an idea...

All you ZD owners, why not post clips with ZD off and ZD on so we can get a good cross section of sounds. One thing that bugs me about a lot of effect web sites is that they only have clips using the effect - so you really can't get a good feel for how the effect colours the sound. Just use a clean dry sound, then add the ZD. Simple? And for even more comparison why not play the same tune (say the head from Revelation or something like that). Just some suggestions.

Hi DD,

The quality of de ZD is already been spoken on the Forum (nice reviews of Aeolian!). My main axe these days is a Tele and it sounds great with ZD. I bought that ZD because I only want to carry my guitar and a good OD with me, when I'm going out for rehearsels. I hate it to transport these heavy tubeamps. At home I use the ZD with my Koch Twintone and I like the OD of the ZD more then the OD channel of that Koch. I do have a D-like amp, but I hadn't time to compare it, not in the last place because I want to focus on playing music and not so much on the gear. I know the thought and the wish to sound as Robben, but intill now I'm trying to be satisfied with sounding as myself. As long as that advokate is not inside of me ;-)

Henk,

thanks for your feedback. I think in among all of this you have hit the nail on the head, and that is that playing is more important, and so is your own sound identity.

Oh so true, but we all like to taste the forbidden fruit (RF tone!) once in a while Twisted Evil , don't we???!!!!!

Cheers,

I love my ZD... soon after I got it, however, I loaned it to a good friend to try out. He said he wasn't that impressed.

He is very into the early Vox sounds, and he said it sounds like it works great on "Fender-like" amps, or 6L6/6V6/5881 family, but didn't do much for his fleet of EL-84 or EL-34 amps.

I sort of agreed with him, except that I played at a jam last week with a guy next to me using a Maz JR (EL-84) and he sounded awesome! My Super Reverb was screaming and his Maz was keeping up! Both ZDs going strong!

I tried the ZD with my Boogie MK IV and I think I now see the issues. The ZD works great with my Super Reverb and my Alessandro Working Dog Rotweiller, but the Boogie didn't seem to like it. I think the issue is that you need a good clean foundation to get the most out of the Zen. Adding it to some already grungy Preamp distortion (Boogie) didn't do it any favors.

I have fount that the Zen Drive fed by my Keeley TS-9 + is tonal heaven. The ZD alone for most OD chores, and kick them both on for the slightly heavier grind (still smooth as silk though).

I am not an engineer by any stretch of the imagination, so it would be up to Alf or someone of his tron-wrangling expertise to say for sure, but I do know that one of the distinguishing charcteristics of the Vox tube amps is that they are Class A configuration where most guitar amps anymore go with Class B. Maybe this has absolutely nothing to do with the Zen's performance... I don't know. Might be interesting to find out from Alf.

Also, I do know that Robben says he finds the Zen works best for him when he starts with a very clean amp sound. Makes me wonder how it would respond to something like a Roland JC-120, noted for it's abilty to attain a very crystal clear sound (and, like my new AC30, an amp I have wanted to own for many years... maybe Santa will bring me one for Xmas this year if I am good). Laughing

Hi GenoBluzGtr,

welcome to the board!

My EL84 equiped Boogie amp (Mullard & Mazda valves) set to ultra clean gives me absolutlety glorious tones with the ZD. It is true, not everyone will like the ZD because of its smoothness. I do get a Dumble, Robben type tone with my rig and ZD, at least to my ears, and a few other great tones to boot. And this is, of course, a good thing!!!

Alf once told me he tested the prototype ZD using a Boogie SOB amp! I am not sure of the spec of this, but what I can say, he certainly had the Robben type mids etc in mind when designing it. Ironically, he apparently tried to model his other pedal, the Mosferatu, on the tones of Robben's cover of the Beatles "Golden Slumbers". Robben apparently did not favour this pedal over the ZD, as he found it a little too "dark" sounding.

One thing for sure, if it ever comes to the day I am totally broke, I will sell the shirt of my back before the ZD (even if I had already sold my guitars and amp Confused ), it is just superb for my tone needs.

Daved, it would be interesting to know how the ZD behaved with the Roland. Isn't that a solid state amp?

Cheers,

DD

DD, that's a good point. Yes, it is, but with an amazing clean sound, and the chorus effect is superb.
